VPS
Hoping some of the techie members can help me out.

I use VPS for various business purposes, I generally use Windows based servers as I only need the VPS for web browsing. Problem is they are more expensive than Linux based servers.

Does anyone know how to configure a Linux based server for web surfing

Any help much appreciated

RE: VPS
servers aren't meant to "surf the web"

u can set up a VPN or proxy on a linux server but i dont know if thats what ur lookin for, but then it would be a VPN server or proxy server u'd be settin up that a client would log on to in order to take advantage of the features of that particular server s/w

anyway search for a tutorial on setting up VPN on ubuntu and you'll be g2g

Yes I know they are not, I just need a secure IP in my home country to access from overseas. Traditional VPN is not secure, but setting up a VPN server might do the trick

Will have a look

RE: VPS
Downgrade to a Linux box and just install a Control Panel. You don't have to see Shell ever again. There are several out there. I use Webadmin, once is installed you can use a regular browser to log into your box and do pretty much administer any type of server there is via browser.

Ended up getting a XEN VPS with CentOS I think

I have the IP and credentials, I have no idea how to connect to it, they gave me a control panel.

usually putting the IP address in your browser url field should take you to CentOs login screen. If that doesn't work , try putting https://(note the S) instead of the default http:// then the IP address. There's also a chance that your provider uses a non standard port number for security purposes.
