Hey guys

For those who work as freelancers, how do you handle the healthcare problem?
just pray to god you dont get sick? or you pay for a private health insurance?
Is there any difference between being a Freelancer in USA and in Europe regarding
the healthcare issue?

Right now I'm only 23, so I can stay on my parent's health insurance plan. Right now buying private health insurance for a freelancer is a bitch. Luckily, in 2014 the health insurance exchanges will go up and freelancers will have a much easier time buying affordable insurance.

try the freelancers union, not sure of the URL, but they always have ads up on the subways...

You can also possibly apply for medicaid depending on your income and what state you are living in.

I'm sure I've heard wrong, but aren't the healthcare exchanges only for people without employer coverage or those making less than 400% of poverty rate?

Basically if you do not work for an employer who provides health insurance, you will buy insurance in the exchange. Think of the exchange like Travelocity for health insurance.

If your income is less than 400% of the poverty line, you will get a subsidy to purchase insurance out of the exchange.

UK = free healthcare, for everyone. (it's not particularly good, but if you break a leg or something you will be treated well enough. )

Some other European countries are the same.

Personally I just have travel insurance that covers me for any major medical stuff while Im abroad. My other insurance is looking after myself - paleo diet, lots of green veggies, priobiotics, coconut oil, and not eating shit or possibly dodgy food, not taking any stupid risks.

That said, I was in a Taxi crash in Thailand recently. This is a place where they have buddha statues on the dashboard to bless them and protect them from accidents, but they deliberately remove the seatbelts because thai people don't like the feel of them. I think taxis are my biggest health risk here.

It is the freelancers union, you can join if you occupation qualifies and get cheaper insurance...
