Am in Kiev.

Just returned from a pipelined first meet. Sushi and wine!!! Yeah, I know. I have already turned down a couple of first meets where they specified sushi restaurants, but in this case I wanted to eat anyway.
We were getting on pretty well

She said she came by taxi from far away, but was vague about exactly where.
We arranged to meet again later tonight as she had to go back to work for 2 or 3 hours, with the inference that she would need to stay in the city (with me) as it would be late.
When I walked her to the taxi she hit me up for 400uah (usd50) for the taxi. I quickly deduced that she would need another 400uah later on.
I refused to pay, telling her that she should have explained the deal at the outset. After whining a bit then trying for a lesser amount, she stormed off. I'm happy, as it's better to find out the deal early on.

I have already "dismissed" two other pipeline prospects last week when they asked for 300uah and 350uah for taxis to come and meet me.

I was already aware of this taxi thing and a friend of mine actually had a Ukraine girl give him a black eye when he refused to pay her taxi fare.

It seems to me that you can travel far and extensively in these cities with the public transport for pennies as I have done.
I have been to the ends of the metro lines and then much further with buses, trams, and marshrutka.

I'm guessing that some of you guys have come up again'st this taxi thing before.
So, are the girls so dumb that they are throwing the money at taxis, or are they using the public transport and pocketing the cash?
Or even that they don't really live that far out and are lying?

Anybody had any insight into what's really going on here?

I have no experience in this but to me it does sound odd and likely that they live closer and just use it as a alternative to getting paid.

It is a scam.No taxi for Kiev route costs more than 80 grivnya.(girls usually have known to them taxi drivers who they call and pay much less).A prostitute can cost as much as 400 grivnya for one hour.You also probably spent 400 grivnya on sushi but Kiev girls ask for that if you are foreigner.

I'm with Kamaki on that. You should have asked "Were you travelling from Lviv here or what?". You have to be careful with a pipeline sites (which one did you use?) girl will try to fuck you in every way possible, you have to be smart, it's Ukraine after all. Try more daygame instead of internet pipelining.

Question is: what if after a couple of minutes shows up with Igor and Andrej two big thugs from the suburbs?

Re daygame rather than pipelining:
Agreed, and I am working on daygame too, but an advantage with pipelining is that you can filter for English speaking non smokers with no kids and hit the deck running when only in town for a short time.

The sites I've been using are UkraineDate And RussianCupid. The site operator seems pretty legit, whereas many of the sites are structured as scams by their operators.
With more than half the messages and "interests" that I receive, the profiles get removed by the webmaster within hours, presumably identified as scammers.
I've also tried Mamba, but just find their site too clumsy to use efficiently.

My suggestion is to daygame once in Kiev - pipelining is ok if you are there for a very short time period but there are many many scams going on with online dating in FSU. 400 UAH for a taxi is a joke. They're scamming you pure and simple.

Any girl that asks for suchi gets told to f*** off. And I say it in Russian with a smile on my face.

never paid more than 50 grivna for tha taxi in kiev, usually about 20.

of course, i never went 2-3h. i woudl think they would take a matruska or a train. never heard of anyone taking a 2h taxi ride. they probably took for the subway home for $0.35

for sure its scam.

The 400 she wanted was supposedly to recover her cost for coming to see me, and the return ride, but any way still well out of order.
But if I had agreed then it would have been another 400 for her to visit later. Like $100 total.
I'm not keen on throwing money away, but I REALLY hate being played for a sucker.

They say that the average income in Ukraine is about $200-250/month and for Kiev $400-500/month.

BTW, are there any taxis here with meters? I have not seen them.

She did not pay more than 30 grivnya because she called a cab driver known to her.This was meant more as a present from you to her to show that you are generous.
Never let a taxi driver use his taxi meter.He will charge you like crazy.You should always prenegotiate the price.(like I give you 40 grivnya.In fact every route that does not cross the river costs less than 40 grivnya).
Either get a number of a taxi driver you trust and call him everytime you need taxi or choose the Lada taxis.Also never get taxis waiting outside clubs etc.They will rip you off.Walk 5 minutes and get a taxi standing on road.

Obviously, we have learned that in Russia and the FSU the rules are completely different than in the West.
So Kamaki when FSU girls have tried the taxi gambit on you.....have you gone along with it and gave them the money? Are you saying that if he would have given the money to her, she would have felt more attracted to him and the next time he was guaranteed a bang? Or is it more common that it was a complete scam and once the money was given, he would have never heard from her again?

taxis with meters? lol

forget about that, you don't even need to take an 'official taxi' (im not even sure they are official anyway)

just put out your hand, wait for someone to stop, tell them where you want to go and ask how much. then bargain. in russian if you want a better price.

usually the car that stops is an older car.

if you cant get a deal, ask the next car.

this is normal in ukraine all ukrainians do this. did it for months and never had any problems (i honestly wish it was like this in the West, it makes sense to have people give each other lifts for a small fee if they have the time/are going that way).

there have been times in ukraine where i stopped 10 cars (i was with a ukrainian who would not let up for principal's sake). I've even gotten totally free rides.

lol, i got some for free as well. I would think as the roads get stuff with newer cars and less ladas there would be less of this. If i remember, all ladas did this but most folks with newer imported cars wouldn't. Kiev was an exception though. Alot of drivers of fancy cars would earn xtra bucks while boss/owner was at work/meeting,etc. Odessa was worst to hitchhike. Drivers always tried to rip me off. I once had a driver who wouldn't let me out ,unless I paid more . I banged his head on the wheel, he let me out ,lol.

You got played. This is well known scam of pro daters. Eating at expensive restaurants (sushi being a favorite just like freshly squeezed orange juice) and the large taxi fees. The only thing missing was the translator needed who happens to be her friend. I am sure she could have taken the bus and most girls would without hesitation if they were really interested.

When I was in Kiev the only problem i has was taxi drivers and ice cream stalls, both try to rip you off like crazy. Even on pre arranged fares they up prices, or stop off at gas stations and ask you to pay for their petrol. I hate haggling at the best of times, but 400uah is nuts.

Here is my advice - get off the internet in Kiev! 80% of the girls on mamba are eather pros or some other kind of scammers. Approach on Kreshatnik or anywhere really. Malls are good too.
I've seen completely disgusting middle eastern men approaching in Puzata hata restaurant and the girls were really friendly. I have approached several when I was there and they are always curious about you.
Taxi drivers are probably the worst in the world as far as trying to rip you off. The best way is always to ask someone about the price of a taxi ride. 40-50 Gryvnas should be enough to get you anywhere in Kiev.
