Discovered this shit last night, game changing meat. It's delicious and really nutritious.

Can be used as a substitute for Beef in pretty much any situation.

Shit's really chewy, and tastes kind of like beef, but with a distinct, but subtle difference. The meat itself is very lean and high protein.

I highly recommend everyone try it.

You never tried it before? Surprising, as you can get it at any Coles, as steaks, burgers or sausages, or at least you could a few years ago.

Great beef substitute, completely organic and wild meat. There's even a source here in Japan and I pick it up in bulk and put it in the freezer.

I've thought about it a number of times, but I don't think I ever pulled the trigger until last night. Shit was being cooked and served up, so I thought I'd give it a try, and fucking loved it

They've had it for years and years at Coles and most other supermarkets and restaurants with many varieties available - kebabs, sausages, etc. The hype died out over it a long time ago which is why it's so cheap and also sold as pet food.

I eat roo meat 2-3x a week. At 21g of protein/100g and only 100cals, its lean and awesome. Try the mince too

I've always wanted to try kangaroo. I've ate deer, frogs, geese, ducks, doves, squirrel, elk, and buffalo that I can remember. (Along with the usual goats, sheep, cattle, pigs, etc). Time to start adding your animals-from-down-under to that list.

I ate (what was supposed to be) kangaroo meat at a spot in Siem Riep, Cambodia. It was delicious and had a unique flavor, the closest thing I could compare it to might be a smokey, richer flavored version of chicken, although I hate to even say that, since they are so different.

I'm surprised that our Aussie members haven't tried it sooner, is it not that popular as a cut of meat over there? I can kind of see how it still might be outside the mainstream, and how a lot of people wouldn't want to eat it since they are kind of adorable creatures. I'd imagine it's very high protein, lean, and most importantly delicious, if it were available in the U.S. I'd order it a bunch. Personally, I like a lot of meats that are not mainstream for the U.S., goat, elk, and wild boar are some of my favorites. Wild boar is amazing if anyone gets the chance to try it.

Had Kangaroo meat two nights in a row the other day. Awesome. Found it in a Finnish supermarket a few years ago and cooked it for my Finnish friends on the BBQ. Point is, its wild game, with its power intact, so it gives you a spring in your step. Whereas, domesticated meat just domesticates you!

Anyone else eat ostrich? I also had that when I tried the kangaroo and thought it was good, basically a much tastier version of chicken. Overall I'd say I thought kangaroo was better, but they are so different they're probably not worth comparing. I know that if for sure I had the choice between ostrich, chicken, and turkey, I'd pick ostrich almost every time. Also, ostrich eggs are supposed to be amazing, although I have no clue where you'd find it in the U.S. If I was in Oz and it was available I'd eat ostrich and kangaroo on the reg.

Edit: I want to retract what I said about kangaroo being similar to chicken, it's really quite different, it's hard to compare to anything, I'd say it's like a cross between goat meat and chicken, if that makes sense to anyone.

Never ate ostrich meat but I have had ostrich eggs. For six months of my life I lived in western Kentucky, down the road from an ostrich farm. One ostrich egg is probably equivalent to a dozen or two chicken eggs. Gotta drill through the shell!

Just thought of an interesting business idea, how about developing a niche market for exotic meats here in the U.S. Buy ranchland in a state like Texas with lenient laws regarding exotic animals, start breeding and raising exotic animals for their meat, do it all "natural and organic". You could probably make a killing off kangaroo, ostrich, pheasant, etc. It might be tough to develop a market for it though, since most Americans aren't very adventurous, plus you might have the PETA people protest and try to fuck with you.

Kangaroo is great, IIRC it is the leanest red meat on the planet.

They're not adorable creatures up front, the males can be quite temperamental and you never want to be on the receiving end of its hiond legs kicking you. My grandfather and uncle used to hunt them all the time.

All of you missing out can thank greenpeace for it not becoming an export meat. Twice in the last 30 years Australian business has attempted to develop an export market, and both times Greenpeace has initiated a counter-marketing campaign.

I would never have compared it to chicken... I'd say a mixture between beef and venison.

I've heard croc goes alright, and game camel too.

Kangaroo meat nice, however I am much more partial to ostrich steak. Griddled up with some salt, pepper and garlic yum yum. It's got a unique taste, quite gamey.

Not only wil they protest you but groups like the Animal Liberation Front may come and vandalize your property or make death threats against you and your family.

Anthony Bourdain talks about such threats in an episode of No Reservations. Apparently he knows a chef in San Francisco that was threatened multiple times for serving foie gras. Radical animal rights activists hid near his house and recorded his wife with his baby, then sent it to him. Shit like that.
