I also think targeting 28 year olds is a mistake...28 year olds are more than a tad savvier than the average 22 year old and can spot a pretender quickly. The average 22 year old in her first job as a marketing assistant at a retailer, however, may be more easily gamed by the suit. That's where i'd focus my energy. Not to mention that there is a small but appreciable difference between a 22 year old body and a 28 year old body!

I'm 22. I 'suit' up. You want to stand out, but you don't want to look like you're on a lunch break from your banking job. And you don't want to look like a Tory.

I'm not sure if you need to 'go all out' in a western country, but I live in Taipei (and before that I lived in Korea). Standing out is necessary to get away from the negative stereotype that's applied to English teachers here.

This was my first thought. Where I'm from you're just as likely to get play hopping out of a truck shirtless as getting out of a Benz in a custom suit. Depends on the environment, but you have to make sure you're not wasting your money (especially considering the OP implied "suiting up" isn't inside of his typical "comfort zone", so-to-speak) when you could just as easily get laid in a t-shirt/jeans.

I'm 27, and I just recently started "suiting up" (albeit in a more casual way) and I wouldn't have even dreamt of doing it earlier. What I think is most important about doing this is that you really just gotta do it for yourself, because you think it makes you fly as shit and fuck all the rest. The "baller" and "intriguing" aspect of rocking a suit is diminished IMO if you've overly calculated the move. Like somebody said earlier in the thread, you definitely don't want to look like a try-hard. Have you ever seen a guy in a suit who just looks "off"? Some guys command the suit look, Don Draper-style, while others look like they borrowed their dad's suit for a job interview. Before dropping a lot of money on a new wardrobe, like DVY said, make sure you're not the latter. You got plenty of time to bang chicks in a £10 t-shirt on your way to your late 20s when suit game can really pay dividends.

At the end of the day tho, I suit up because I like the way it portrays me and how I carry myself as a result. I honestly never think twice about which girls like it and which ones don't - I do it because I want to and could give a fuck less if chicks like it, they should like me regardless. That attitude will help you snap up those 28 year olds faster than any suit will on its own.

I absolutely agree with the second part, so think we agree, I think you misunderstood my point though. Which is that it is going to be very easy for them to figure out he is broke before sleeping with him, thus ruining many chances that could otherwise be converted by just not being disingenuous/incongruent to begin (which also kind of reinforces a poor self image of being a dude who cannot get women without trickery)

How are they going to figure out he's broke that quickly? Check his credit score?

Girls are dumb. When they're genuinely attracted to a guy, they will blissfully ignore warning signs and play along with the fairy tale. This is why so many dumb bitches are shocked when they find out the dude they've been screwing is married, despite his obviously shady behavior. It only becomes an issue when they're losing attraction or the lies become too blatant.

I agree. LOTS of ways to fake being wealthy. Made-up business cards with fake titles. "This piece of crap? Oh, my Lexus in the shop. That's why i'm driving this". "This studio apt? This is a pied-a-tierre that's been in my family for years, sort of a guest house. I'm using it b/c the house that my parents bought me as a graduation gift is being renovated". Then drive them past any house in a swanky part of town that has a chain link fence on it b/c its being gutted and say "See that? That's my house!".

I mean, uh, these are TERRIBLE things that might fool a woman into giving up her precious sexual restraint....you should NEVER do any of these things! Because that would be wrong...

@g yeah we are on the same page.

I don't necessarily agree you need to go to high end right at 27 though, you should however be able to address both markets (or game at both). Need to become more like water at that point.

If you can still rock the shirtless beach game why not? As long as you are always improving.

40 was just a general metric, I think most would agree many men grey by 40. Then you shouldn't be running around like a clown taking tequilla shots in a low end club, a different type of life of party game is needed. (I guess you could - referring to tequilla clown- but I certainly don't want to be doing that)

Ok, yeah I can agree with this. But I think if you're 28 and have not made major bucks yet but are looking to get into the game (Whatever game that may be, whether business, finance, or whatever), I don't think anyone is going to take you as arrogant for wanting to look the part. I think most people would see it as being trying to step up to the plate in a way. But sure, at 22 it probably won't work as well.

I think some of you guys are overlooking the fact that certain dudes just don't have the look or demeanor to douchebag / bro game successfully. I got better results wearing suits at 24 than I did wearing sandals and flip-flops.

Hold on, when did I say custom suits? Hhahah quite funny. The suits I got are cheap, they were on sale, I don't remember paying more than 200-300 pounds. I mostly buy my stuff from Armani Jeans, Austin Reed and House of Fraser.

Bateman is one of my biggest role models, I'd someday like to have a closet full of suits like him! I'm normally a douche bags on off days, and I usually wear a denim jacket, v-neck t-shirt, a silver chain and pair of Nike Air Max Tailwind.

DVY, I do have a Navy linen jacket, but the buttons are black, so I'm gonna have to get some gold buttons. I also own some slacks, I mostly bought them from Zara. As for shoes, I'm mostly coverd, I just need a pair of suede shoes. I don't like wearing sneakers because they make me look short. I wear Nike Air Max all the time, at first I thought it was a little awkward, but now I think it looks great.

No where did I say I dislike Wall Street it's what I do for a living.

CFA? Come on you don't even need it. It has nothing to do with getting promoted. I will break all the myths you may believe.

1. Math doesn't matter in Wall Street
2. CFA and MBA is for people who don't get directly promoted
3. You get promoted by adding value to the firm which has nothing to do with complex financial engineering
4. If you get a CFA, it will be harder most of the time to get ino a hedge fund. A hedge fund is where you want to be.
5. If you want to do private equity = bad idea long term you are better off getting promoted on the sell side because you will get paid more and wont get kicked out after a 2 year rotation
6. You will know if you are good at your job by year 3, if you don't make ~200K by year 3, you're not good.
7. Bulge brackets are only good if they internally promote, if you join a sweat shop just to get MS in your résumé you will be fucked long-term
8. You should never interview through a headhunter or a résumé drop after your first job, you should get referred by a BSD
9. Learn to sell.
10. If you can't figure out politics by week 4 you will be fucked, get the best MD to like you, the best md is the one who is the lowest on the asshole ranking and has rows of lucites (banking), high ranking (II for research), massive set of contacts (S&T)

Always exceptions but the above will save you years of time and research. But feel free to do what you like, wish I knew all the 10 point I posted back in the day, good luck out there!

(Oh and dont pay for a financial modeling course, that's another huge waste of thousands of dollars, for the fuck of it loaded on the blog in my signature is a full bottoms up apple model, spending time building models while in college = wasted your own valuable time)

Get a CFA. The knowledge alone is worth it. Level one is tough, but if you take a review class, it will be easier.

When people tell you "Less education is better - TRUST ME!", ask yourself: Is that usually true?
