Any of you guys can recommend a DSLR camera, I want to start getting into photography as I start traveling more, and I don't know much about cameras or the lenses. Wanted to pick up something under $1000 that is a good beginner camera. Thanks.

I'm not a photographer, but from what I have read photography is mostly in the person behind the camera rather than the camera itself. Why not practice with a cheap point and shoot until you have the basics down, and if you think better equipment is going to help, buy it then.

Lenses can cost as much or more than the camera body. I don't own a DSLR, but I don't think I would travel internationally with it; too bulky and too big of a target.

I'd get a little bit older Nikon or Canon professional series used. A solid used camera should be <$500. Then you can pick up some lenses if you want.

I'd go with a point and shoot for travel though. They're making pretty nice ones now.

thanks guys, yea i was on the fence about bringing a bulky camera down to SA, maybe a point and shoot will be a better option.

If you want to get into it then don't get a point and shoot, although they are making some nice ones these days.
I have a Canon DSLR (Rebel series) but the lenses are expensive, Nikon seems to make cheaper lenses.

DSLR's are very recently becoming more and more redundant with the advent of the DSLR quality compact Sony Rx-100 and the top of the line Rx-1.

I just ordered the Nikon D5200 Digital SLR camera. I have never had a SLR camera before and don't really know much about them. I have some learning to do I know.

Reading some of the comments on the website reviews it seems not many people are pleased with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens the camera comes with. Do you guys have any recommendations on a lens that would be a good upgrade? I really just plan on using the camera to shoot pics of naked girls, more then likely in indoor settings. Do I need a different lens for such photography?

Also if anyone knows any good sources for learning about using a camera such as this feel free to list them.

An if anyone else has a DSLR camera and takes cool pics with them they should post some pics up in this thread!

I wouldn't rush to a lens upgrade. Use the camera for a while to find out what your "style" is, then compare how you want your photos want to be with how they are turning out. For what you describe, the kit lens should be quite sufficient until you start introducing professional grade lighting into your room or you want to do pro portraits.

I bought the canon t3i a few weeks after I started this thread, and I now use both 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens, they are a nice combination. They're both good lenses for beginner/intermediate use.

The first lens upgrade you should get is a 50mm prime, f 1.8 is good enough. You can pick one up for less than $200 for most cameras. Better in low light situations and greater depth of field are the biggest advantages. If you are shooting mostly indoors, an f 1.8 prime lens should be quite useful.

Having said that, if I were you, I would return the Nikon and get a mirrorless camera. They are much more compact, and the image quality is just as good as a DSLR. I am looking at the Sony Alpha 6000 right now.

^^ I used my 50mm 1.8 today I got the depth of field that my zooms couldn't get (the background was too sharp). I became the zoom, moving back and forth as needed. It is definitely needed for any sort of portrait work.

I have one Nikon 18-55 and not one complaint about it. Its a pretty decent glass (for the price), flexible enough, and takes good pics.

Taking into consideration that the point of the kit lens it to leave you wanting more so you go and buy another lens, they failed with the 18-55. Unless you are a pro, or have very specific needs, thats all the lens you are going to need.

I also have a 50mm 1.8 (non autofocus), but Im planning on trading that for a 70-300, as I use it very rarely because the 18-55 allows for very different shots. Im using the 50mm for close ups and macros.

For Roosh: If you are using the 5200 for close up video, consider a 50mm, it gives a very nice blurry background effect. Problem would be that you cant move around too much because you come out of focus.

Sample product shot for a client, very little post processing on this. No background removal or anything. Just turned up the vibrance a bit in photoshop. Sony Alpha 55 and 50mm 1.8., but I had the aperture set to f8 for this one.

Got it refurbished, with 2 lenses
18-55mm and 55-210mm


I actually don't like big bulky DSLR Cameras.
I feel like.. at a point.. its less about the Camera.. and about how you control it.
