Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table. The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million.

Read the backstory. The initial plea deal was for 5 years or something. Then the public got word of the story.

A prosecutor who'd send us to prison for 10 years for some Molly wanted to give a human slave seller 5 years.

America is fucked.

And lawmakers will continue getting away with pushing a heavier prison/police state because they will use fear and emotion, even though stats show crime on a whole on the downtrend.

I can't believe what Harper is doing here in Canada trying to form the country's prison system to that similar to certain states.

One of the reasons I became disgusted working for my nonprofit with children was because of how they treated the kids.

Kids were just floating $$$ signs that could be used to extract money from insurance companies.

Even though I was supposed to help children by building relationships, my fat feminist cunt of a boss would make me stop working with children after a few years, because "insurance companies didn't like it."

And when I told her my methods involved being friends with the child, she said, "You're not supposed to make friends."

Keep in mind I was working with kids whose parents died from cancer, or were throw in jail from drug abuse, and every kid came from a divorced home.

I actually got to go inside of "correctional facilities," which were small prisons for kids Mom's couldn't control, and they would just keep kids locked in shitty rooms and dope them up on drugs while letting them play video games.

Kids growing up in the 1800's had better lives than this. So, to tie my experiences in with the story - it doesn't surprise me at all.

I just wish he wont get solitary confinement...

But what about the contractor that paid him? did he got time too? Are the guys he sentenced going to be released or are they just locking him up and sweeping the whole deal under the rug?

True. Once you introduce the profit motive into locking people up it creates perverse incentives to lock up more people and keep people locked up for longer periods of time.

A lot of Florida county jails were like that because the state or fed paid them so they would sentence you for any bullshit for 3 days or whatever now they're all over filled. They sleep outside in a tent one county north of me.

I was wondering the same thing. Apparently, about 4,000 convictions which he issued have been overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. If there are people who he sentenced to incarceration who are still in jail, it is my opinion that one of two things will happen. The first possiblity is that this whole situation will be grounds for a new trial in which case the people who were wrongfully sentenced could file a Motion to Set Aside Plea and/or a Motion for New Trial based on fraud, failure to properly advise of right to counsel, etc. If that is the case, there are many Pennsylvania lawyers who could make a ton of money trying to set aside the wrongful convictions and/or sentences. If such Motions are granted and the proceedings are ultimately terminated in the defendants' favor, that may pave the way for lawsuits against the state based on the wrongful sentences. The second possiblity is that all persons who were sentenced to a period of incarceration by this judge be outright released. This second possibility does not make any sense because I am sure that some of the people who were sentenced to jail belong there. It would not be fair to the public to release people who were rightfully incarcerated.
