You got blown out because either

1) Your approach sucked and they used not speaking English as an excuse (when in fact they did speak English) or

2) They were tourists from another S.American country or

3) Because they did like the fact that you were not trying to speak their language in their country.

Argies have an inferiority complex and their fragile egos do not sit well will such behaviour.

I speak Spanish so I never had this issue. I mostly approached in Spanish and we just switched to English when I could see that they were comfortable.

The only way I can imagine this being true is if you just hung out at all of the expat bars in Recoleta (i.e., Shamrock) because again, my experience down there was vastly different, and I speak Spanish AND successfully picked up girls there in Spanish. Recoleta is where all the English-speaking Argies go because they know tourists/expats are there. If you go to the clubs in Costanera (Jet, Pacha, et al.) or the bars in San Telmo or Palermo you get a VASTLY different experience.

I will relay my experience, and people can decide for themselves:

- Of the 3 Portenas I dated in my time there, none were conversational in English. One knew absolutely no English. Not a word. All were educated. These were girls I spent weeks/months with, so I'm sure I would have noticed if they were being coy about it.

- Of the social circle of 10-15 local guys/girls I hung out with, only 2-3 spoke English at a conversational level. Most spoke a few words, but were not conversational. A few spoke none. Again, these were locals I hung out with for 3+ months. I'm sure I would have noticed their English capabilities.

- Probably 1/4 of the girls I approached in BA spoke some English. Most of those spoke it poorly. My experience was not that they would withhold their English to get you to go away. Usually if you approached a girl who spoke English she would get VERY excited to speak to a foreigner as a way to practice. Few bartenders, bouncers, waiters, cab drivers speak English. My Spanish tutor barely even spoke English and she was a professional language teacher.

So to anyone who is wondering, "Do I need to know Spanish to do well in Buenos Aires?" The answer is yes. Hands down, yes, you need to know some Spanish.

Well I lived in Palermo and I approached girls I would say most days without problem. I did not speak good Spanish when I arrived. BA is where I hired a private teacher and learned it.

The worst English I ever came across from a local was one of my Argentinian regular girls (born and lived in BA) who claimed that she spoke 'no english' but after seeing her for several months it turns out she could understand my English when I spoke but, when she did speak English she would always fuck up her grammar.

Learn the lesson. And if I were you, I would have a stern talk with your colleague and teach him about pens, paper and writing down messages.

Yeah, I'm new at this spot and the guy was pissed off, so I didn't wanna push my luck. The money is pretty damn good, around 3 xs what I was making at my first job. This spot is soooo legit as far as picking up. Girl guests try to get us to go out with them all the time, not to mention all the hotties I work with. This place is a gold mine. I have a friend who can hook me up with a job doing the same thing at another place making a little more money, but the benifits of working at where I'm at now is worth taking the pay cut, especially since the money is already good. This hotel actually advertises itself as a party hotel, you have to be 21 to even stay there. I love it!

I side with entropy here 100%. Unless you met two people during those 8 months, your experience is simply not the reality. You said you meet girls from couchsurfing... girls there would most likely speak english.

I've met Argies in the states that hardly even speak english. But, in Lumiers defense, I have heard a large amount of people speak English in BA. But I find it very very unlikely that he never met one Argie that didn't speak english while he was there.

plenty of argies do have basic knowledge of english, more than other latin americans. but, very few you can hold a conversation with.

I am not sure about Brazil, but I know in the South American countries I've been, I did not see girls going with just any guy at all.

Of course this does not mean they have status ideas the same as American women, but they did have standards. Like Roosh and some others have pointed out, it is important you are not a dead beat with no job. This is not status whoring this is survival. Some of the middle class girls work their asses off just to have some decent clothes and an apartment that is safe to live in. If they want a smooth talker with absolutely no future they can surely find them plentiful in their own back yard.

Indeed I cannot re-inforce enough this very point...its not about gold digging at all. Simply put their societies are actually closer to they way it SHOULD be...the way dating and love used to be here like 50 years ago. Part of a mans attractiveness is that he has a stable job and can provide safety and protection for his family. This is not meaning you must be loaded but a solid job and work ethic is simply attractive to most women around the world.

Agreed. A decent average girl work her ass to get dressed, a place to put her bed and have fun. Why should her carry a dead weight like a man without any worries? Is not about how much he earns. Is about if he works, what is he doing to improve in life as her. Not many of us South Americans are rich... So, our value is "how much effort do you put in your acomplishments?"
