Disclaimer: This is not one of those height and attraction threads and hope it will not devolve into one.

I am 6 ft tall but look more 5'10 ish and noticed that despite being of the same or similar height, some guys appear significantly taller or shorter than me

I initially thought it was because of body posture or musculature , but even after i gained a lot of muscle and improved my posture i could tell these differences.

After some googling I recently discovered that it has to do with Vertical Body Proportions.

Men (and women) with a short torso and long legs just "look" taller people with a long torso and short legs. I am of the latter category.

The Models are the same height but which ones look taller ?






What you can do about it

If you have long legs and a short torso, you're in luck. If you have short legs and a long torso try to wear your jeans higher i.e. just below your belly button instead of at the hips . Match those with short and fitting European style T-shirts which end around the hips and not any lower.

This way you can accentuate the length of your legs while making your torso look not as elongated.

Usually "walking height" isn't the same as measured. About an inch lower, from what I remember in Kinesiology class back in college.

When you're being meausured, back & neck straight, legs closer. People typically see you an inch shorter than your measured height. Shoes can help of course.

Very true, the long legs, short torso looks taller.

I'm one of the balanced types I suppose, neither long nor short legs or torso in relation to one another, but balanced. I think I look my height.

The way I see it if you are taller then a girl and it is noticable when you are standing close to her, talking or dancing, and she looks up to you to see your eyes, then you are OK and don't have to worry about height issues. She is not seeing your legs at all when you are close.

Yes I am a legit 5'11" but I have had some girls guess I was 5'8" or 5'9" but I guess I have also had some girls guess 6'1" so maybe they just suck at guessing.

In my experience this has more to do with body language and body composition (i.e. how fat you are) than anything else. To look taller stand straight, project confidence and lose weight.

Weren't you banned? And yes proportions do affect how tall you appear. I would probably also tuck in your shirt if you have a long torso, or have it cut short if you don't tuck it in. You don't want to extend your torso at all visually with clothes on.

worst is some of us ectomorphs have long legs and torso making us look skinnier than we really are lol.Any advice?

Does being lean (low body fat) make you look shorter?

I know being lean and muscular is ideal.

But say someone who has a decent amount of mass, at 20% body fat vs 12% body fat. Which one would he look taller/shorter than he actually is?
