Take Advantage of Your Insurance Benefits
Hey everyone

I have recently gone through my insurance benefits and came to the realization that many people do not take advantage of the stuff they offer.

An example of this are orthopedic shoes that you can claim on most insurances. In my case I'm with Blue Cross and I get $700 a year in prescription shoes if I simply have a prescription from a doctor.

Step One: Check to see what benefits you get with your insurance and check to see if you can get this "Orthopedic" claim.

Step Two: Tell your doctor your feet hurt

Step Three: Get prescription

Step Four: Go shopping at retail stores that accept these kinds of prescriptions. They often have very high name brand names. I got three pairs of shoes two of Tsubo and one of ecco for a total of $706 (no tax too!)

Step Five: Send your claim to your insurance and make them pay for your shoes.

Step 6: Get a renewal every year for as long as you can.

Hope this helps a few of you!

I have the insurance I get that comes with my University which comes to $128 every semester.

If you have insurance its worth looking into as most medical insurances cover orthopedic shoes and just never advertise it.

Good idea, I keep forgetting to take advantage of my benefits I get through my union, which includes a few massages each year, I'll make sure to get those this year though.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Yeah, man, that's legit.

Also, get your lab work done. Measure your testosterone/cholesterol, etc. Then you can track that stuff over time (I have almost 10 years worth of records) and troubleshoot.

You'll be glad to have that data when you're older!

Some insurance companies cover acupuncture. That is mumbo jumbo in terms of "fixing" anything, but it's relaxing as fuck. I would go and treat it as a "spa" or massage type thing.

Once I was so relaxed after acupuncture that I could barely walk 8 blocks home.

Chiro visits are often covered, too. Some chiros practice Active Release Therapy (google it) that is invaluable for nagging sports injuries.

So I'd go in and just have him work on some knots and scar tissue in my shoulders/back/traps/calves. Got 12 visits a year and used all of them.

Nice ideas. Definitely if you don't have a high deductible plan. Lab work probably worth it regardless.
Not mentioned yet - gym memberships. I get the usual $20/month off from my insurance for 12 visits/month. If you can't get to the gym 12 times a month, just quit life.

Fantastic tread! I guess it mostly applies to US people on here as most of the countries have socialized healtcare.
That said I have a pretty good insurance with Aetna.
1.My chiropractor visits are covered - those are priceless! I feel so much better after adjustment.
2. My RX glasses are covered - I have $250 towards the frames . Any idea where to get the most expensive frames I can use to convert to sun shades? I like Carreras! Smile
3.Acupuncture is not covered....but I wonder what else I can use this insurance for?

Socialized healthcare (at least in Canada) doesn't cover therapeutic visits.

Things like massage, chiro, physio etc are usually only covered with private insurance.

I'm Canadian and even though I don't have to pay to see the doctor, I still need insurance to cover my orthopedic shoes, massages, and my travel insurance.

I find the best method is to write down a list of questions you have and to call them up and just ask straight up.

Trader any idea in what you have to say to ask to get a discount on a gym membership?
