I think it's the flip side of Puritanism. Since there's maybe more sexual guilt in the land of work-til-you-drop Calvinism, they try to show they're rebellious and swallow.

Jesus, talk about a generalization. In all the countries I've been in there have been swallowers, spitters, mask makers, and outsiders...not one nationality stood tall over the rest when it came to gobbling the goop.
