Working the big crowd is like playing a jazz improv session. I don't play jazz, but I can pretend-play and mimic ('air jazz') which is kind of meta-improvisational. The point here is that a lot of it is spontaneous and taking what you can get and building on it. Part art, part skill, part inspiration. This may sound vague, or be said about any other game, true -- but there's something about the big crowd that is crucially different from the typical bar/club scene. Women go to bars and clubs primarily for much of the same reasons men do. For the excitement of meeting potential sexual mates. Having a good time there is ancillary to meeting new people. In the big crowd though, the primary reason to be there is not necessarily to meet new people, but to have a good time. You normally go to see big acts, shows etc. because of them. The rest is bonus.
Every big crowd has its vibe, its groove, its flow, and our job is to identify that vibe, that groove and that flow and roll with it. I think it's analogous to how one goes about things differently in New York City, than it does in Springfield. When we are in New York City we have to quickly adapt to its dynamics, or else we’ll be left to dust. Like I was when I went to Coachella, a few years back. There was something off between Coachella and me in that particular time and we didn't click at all. I hated being there, and totally blew it by dwelling on the negative, instead of salvaging something out of the experience like I should have done (thinking about it now in retrospective).
What has worked
for me in the past:
I've never been in the big crowd where people didn't seem happy to be there. Generally people are happy in big crowds and they show it on their faces and in their (gr)attitudes. So I adopt the grinning idiot stance too. OK, kidding, not quite the grinning idiot, but surely chill and relaxed. Chillaxed is the new word. I have to be, I'm a big guy, and if it's dark outside, and the crowd is massive, I may be sending dangerous signals if I'm anything but chill at first (especially in America). In the chill mode I come off as a big, lovable dog. Now, that impression is wrong for the fancy indoor club, but this is a different beast we are talking about. In the big crowd she's to have a good time, and everything else is gravy. I'm just an accessory to her good times. Which is perfect because first impressions are half of the battle.
But that's just an outer shell. Inside I'm constantly scanning the scene and evaluating targets and odds. And approaching. Because I'm not necessarily here for the show (though sometimes I am), but for business. There's definitely a predatory aspect to it. But that's normal for what it is.
I'm also heavily spontaneous, and somewhat mysterious. But being mysterious can sometimes be off putting to some European women, so I offset that by being extra playful.
Being all -- direct and laid back, anonymous and familiar -- I'm the big crowd personified.
Other than that, props go a long way. Nothing will bond you quicker with a girl, especially an American one, than offering her to share your joint (metaphors galore). If she will puff on your joint (and she will if you offer!) you better believe she can be tempted to do other things.
The greatest thing about big crowds is that most women are either already high and/or drunk, or are looking to become so. So approaching them is very easy because they are already enthusiastic. Sometimes even overly so. Like at raves.
And there are no usual bitch shields because the implicit understanding among all is on having a good time, not meeting potential mates.
The big crowd also provides an alibi. When a girl suddenly disappears from the club everyone can pretty much label her a slut. When she suddenly disappears from her stomping grounds in the big crowd everyone thinks she went to get a drink, or changed a spot, or whatever. But everyone knows she's still in there somewhere. Lost in that crowd. Even though she's probably making out heavily in the nearest dark corner.
The big crowd elicits breaking down of the usual sexual inhibitions, and acts as aphrodisiac. Women get turned on being sexual in front of others as long as they feel safe doing so. The big, dark crowd offers them that perfect combination of visible anonymity that all exhibitionists dream of.
And on and on.
