wix for web design
Hey,

I was curious if anybody has heard of, or uses wix.com, what are your thoughts on it?

Also, I’m curious about what implications this company could have on the web design industry? Will stuff like this put a lot of web designers out of business?

Wix is basically a website which allows you to create a good looking, clean, and customized web design through the use of their templates. Then, I believe, you have the option of using their paid service to add extra features. I hate to say that their free website service makes websites which look nicer than the ones which my friend gets paid to build (at least he’s getting paid to build them for the time being, that is…) From my limited experience, the websites look like something that a customized wordpress website would look like, although I’m not a web designer, so I could be mistaken.

I really think that the idea behind this site is brilliant – they are wholesaling and mass-producing a service typically offered by small companies / freelancers. I think they will put a lot of people out of business – just like walmart and target, but of the internet space.

Thoughts?

If you're going to have a generic design, why not stick with the default wordpress theme? Publish on tumblr or twitter for that matter. Many people use these platforms to build enormous audiences. All because the content they produce is worth consuming.

I think that to get to the level of the wix websites you would need to have customized ($$?) plugins on wordpress - dont quote me on this, though. So I guess this service is more tailored towards people who want a more extensive web site, rather than blog.

I don't think it will destroy the website industry. Wix and WordPress sites are basically at the bottom of the pecking order as far as websites go. The top of ladder would be Web application sites like banks or Amazon. The type of people who would even consider using Wix are small budget customers you really don't want anyway. The type of people who think $1,000 is a fortune to spend on a professionally designed website. Designing for them is basically bottom feeding. So good riddance I say.

I've personally never used Wix and I suppose it's fine if you stick to a templated site and don't have much need for customized functionality/layout and fine tuning. For some guy with 4 page static site for his mom and pop business and $500 to spend, it may do the job.

I also imagine there will be a lot of bloated code.
