I'm very curious as to how someone becomes a dabler. I mean it sounds coo, but who the fuck hires some random dude to perform cosmetoc surgery, corporate law, or engineering??

I more or less do the same...

Become skilled (or at least knowledgable) in a variety of different skills and then find freelance work based on that. Generally, people won't just "hire some random dude", it's all about networking. If you meet the right people and have the knowledge, you can work in whatever industries you want with relatively few long-term commitments.

Fair enough...but still seems like surgery, law, engineering, and things like that are not just casually learned...

If you have a college near you, then it's possible to dabble. I was enrolled in a 75 person Financial Economics course this summer and we had about 5-10 people who attended despite not being enrolled. They were very scholarly and the Professor and Graduate instructor had no problem grading their homework/exams, seeing them during office hours, and giving them class info. From what I understand, they emailed and met with the Professor to assess their circumstances in order to get his permission to attend.

I also dabble in freelance nuclear engineering. And a little micro-chip design in my free time. But most of my free time is spent creating new arrangements for my rock band.

And while it's fun to have varied interests, I have to say that more and more of my time is being consumed in my new biotech startup venture.

I may even need to cancel the book tour for my latest graphic novel.

Of course I could never get so much done without the gracious help of my students at the ashram.

Anyway, got to go. I've got a plane to catch for the Swiss para-skiing competition.

Xsplat - I'd really like to pick your brains please. How do you end up dabbling in so many things? As a strategy/ management consultant or so I could understand. But as a technical skillset I wonder how you could do all the following:
- Cosmetic Surgery - Nuclear Engineering - Micro-chip design (PREVIOUS THRee))

Forget about who's hiring, and lets assume the Writing, Graphic Novels, Startup are self-acquired learned skills, the PREVIOUS three would probably take some serious education/ training time.

Or did you double/ triple major in University?

Honestly, which ashram do you meditate at/ follow? Unless your downloading all this knowledge from the Universe ala Neo + Matrix style.. then I'd like to try those meditations.
