RE: A Life in Japan - Documentary
I just watched the whole thing. I thought it was really interesting. At first I thought it was just going to be about how great Japan was but about 30 or 40 minutes in they started to talk about some of the problems that come with living there.

Overall it was very well made.

That was interesting having not been to Japan before, thank you. I'm sending it to a friend who recently returned from Japan to see his thoughts on it.

It was well made but quite different from my own experiences, but the again people can't tell me apart from Japanese and I just bullshit my way through everything so my life here is mostly up.

Really interesting documentary.

I seriously considered moving to Japan once upon a time, this does give the feeling that it's a place for people who feel lost in their home countries.

The English guy who found the Japanese weren't satisfied by his real reason for moving there came up with a satisfactory answer that says a lot about Japanese culture:
Quote:"What is your purpose in coming to Japan?"
"I have a fetish for long, black hair"
"Ah, I see!"

If you haven't read "Black Passenger, Yellow Cab," then that's also a really honest book on the ex-pat experience of a Jamaican guy.

"I'd hate myself if I had that kind of attitude, if I were that weak." - Arnold

Pretty interesting how those interviewed say you can't get a sensible considered answer if you ask "why" things are the way they are in Japan.

Buddhism seems to offer pathways for reflection and yet in Buddhist Thailand people do not have critical thinking skills whatsoever.

I think it's really interesting that you can have high IQ, technically excellent populations in certain countries that don't ask questions.

I use to work for a Japanese company and they sent me to Tokyo several times for business. Also, there was a colleague of mine that they actually sent to Tokyo to work and live there permanently. This could be an opportunity for some guys here. If you are really interested in living in Japan, work for a Japanese company, like Sony, Pioneer, etc., and show your boss you are are a good employee and interested in Japanese culture. You could end up in Japan.

That really rang true to my experience living there for two years, both good and bad points. Nice find.

Reading the comments, there are a lot of haters on YouTube claiming that these guys are just there to satisfy their "fetishes". Those commenters must not have actually watched the film.
