I can't speak for mma but at least in boxing you can generally get on an amateur card if you're willing to travel and have a trainer that will network on your behalf.

Where I live there are a couple of mma gyms that have fight teams and I met someone whose husband trains at one of the gyms. She told me that most of the guys on the fight team don't really make a lot and spend a lot of time in the gym training (often during the hours that most people are working). Every combat sport is full of guys who thought they were tough but dropped out because the training was hard or because they did not go anywhere with it or because once they bell rung they realized how real the shit was. For example, I knew a guy who was 6'2 205 but was athletically talented enough to cut 30 pounds. His first real fight he came out looking great. He was great with the foot work so he danced circles around the other guy until the last minute of the first round. The guy caught him with a beautiful left jab followed by an overhand right that did not knock him out but but him against the ropes for the rest of the round. He told his corner he couldn't keep going and the fight was stopped. He was a hell of an athlete and had never really been hit until that point and when it happened his visions of being a pro fighter died.


Given the little I know about mma I would say that if you are serious then do your best to find guys in your area who fight competitively and train in a way that gives you something to offer them as a sparring partner. One of the guys I knew who was a pro boxer was always looking for south paws who were quick counter punchers to spar with because that's what he struggled with. When he or his trainer found one they would usually keep the kid around and the trainer would work with him. From what I've seen all mma guys aren't well rounded so if you can put together a good striking or ground game then you'll have value as a sparing partner and can probably get some training for their coach because of that. IMO talent alone does not make a great fighter, the coaches they work with have a lot of impact on turning a regular fighter into a pro.

Someone talked about krav chicks thinking they could beat a man, I think the ones at a higher level could. For a lot of people krav is not a sport or a way to burn calories, it is a tool to do the most damage to anyone who messes with you as quickly as possible. No a smaller woman cannot beat a larger man if she tries to trade punches with him but we all have soft spots on our bodies. It doesn't matter if you're 75lbs or 300lbs the same force is needed to crush your trachea. Of course this is America, where in most gyms kickboxing is cardio kickboxing but if you find the right instructor (male or female) I think krav is legit.

Nah man, I'm in no way considering doing MMA as a career. I'm already in my mid 20s and that's far too late to start from scratch and hope to "make it." The reason I'm looking for somewhat hard-core instruction is not to prepare me for the pro circuit but because I truly am interested in learning to fight, for its own sake. Also, intense sparring and competition would add an element of excitement and challenge that is currently sorely lacking in my day to day life.

If you're still in school, just sign up for the wrestling team. It's that easy. Branch out later. Anyone see Barnett's last fight? That's why I switched to judo decades ago and later integrated aikido.

If not, I say start out with a combination of judo and boxing.

i trained boxing for many years and have a few amateur fights and in my mind it has nothing to do with street fighting nor would it help me in that situation. Being able to deploy your technique in the ring despite the emotions/adrenaline is something that is learned, but i do not believe there is a cross-over to fighting a drunk on the street where the most effective tactic is probably tackling the guy and pounding his head into the pavement. And no, you cannot train your hand not to break if you are stupid enough to punch someone full force without protection and hit the wrong part of their head. Bottom line is that boxing is a great sport but do not learn to box for street fighting for many reasons.

Contact sports such as boxing, football (at certain positions), and wrestling train you take hits and force you to be tough or leave. For our international members, I enjoy watching rugby, and it's tough: football without the pads. Remember I said branch out later.

Outside of most judo and maybe some bjj, you need to be skeptical about martial arts instruction. However, tbone46 is right, everyone should learn chops, hammerfists, and elbows.

I have a hard time believing that that much boxing and even some amateur matches wont help you win a street fight. Street fights don't typically last that long and most are against people with no training at all. The average guy doesn't even know how to swing a punch.

Give me a guy who has no experience fighting/training vs a guy who spent a couple years boxing and Ill put my money on the boxer 100% of the time assuming they are roughly the same size.

Boxing definitely helps you in a street fight, IF you keep your cool and don't just start throwing wild hooks.

Look at any "worldstar" type street fight, it's two guys just angrily throwing, usually, wild right hooks followed by wild left hooks. If you used boxing technique it's extremely easy to counter in this situation. Just a matter of staying cool under pressure.

If the guy is bigger than you you have to just figure he'll rush at you so you gotta try and hit him with an uppercut on the way in. If you don't land and get taken down though, all bets are off and just gotta scrap.

How do you learn to stop a takedown? By practicing thousands of takedown defense against athletic opponents who are giving 100% trying to take you down using techniques that work.

Same for escaping mounted position, sweeping from the guard, rnc, etc.
I haven't seen this in Krav in real life or in their videos, what they do looks like sequences out of Black Belt magazine from back in the day.

Of course the RoK piece, your local KM gym make Krav sound legit, they have the slickest advertising, after all they're Jews.

Why not do two months of KM and then one day go roll at the sport fighting BJJ gym. When you are being submitted think about whether or not you are in any position to gouge out your opponents eyeballs, or bite his nuts off, as the 'street fighting experts' always say they'd do. Should be an eye opener.

I don't know. After watching KM on Fight Quest and Human Weapon, I wouldn't fuck with the chix who instruct the Israeli special forces. The type of KM you find in your neighborhood? You should be discerning.

Just remember BJJ is a very narrow--as opposed to broad--skillset. That's why MMA isn't BJJ.

Definitely will look into it. I would like to not make stupid mistakes the first time and get the best bang for my buck. I always seem to blindly try stuff until I find the right mix.
