Yeah it's enough to make you paranoid. There is zero doubt that paid government trolls are tapping away at keyboards on a regular basis. Conspiracy forums would be the obvious ones, portraying themselves as raving nutsos to discredit the conspiracists, or being thoughtful conspiracists who hey presto see the light and turn to the pro-government viewpoint, confusing a lot of people (seen that a lot on JFK assassination forums). But they could be more subtle than that as well, getting involved in social engineering through feminist websites or whatever.

I know law enforcement has been doing this for while particularly with gang activity. Lots of self-incriminating photos and messages get posted on sites like thehoodup, which is a forum that discusses gangs and makes it really easy to make cases against said criminals. There's been quite a few cases where guys have been arrested and even convicted from police finding evidence just from social media alone after coercing members of those said forums to give up information abut crimes as they impersonate other gang members.

If any of you meet a person who tries to incite you to do violence for whatever reason, DO NOT listen to them. Odds are they are a federal, state, or local law agent trying to build a case and fuck you in the ass if you don't cooperate.

There is a video out there of 3 undercover pigs hanging around a protest and trying to incite the protestors to commit violence. There cover is blown and just stand there being the faggots they are.

The NSA is concerned with US national security. They have no interest in this forum. I have no doubt that they are operating shills and spreading misinformation on jihadist message boards and the like -- at least I should hope so. If they weren't doing that they should be fired.

The only thing that's "scary" about the powerpoint linked to above is its low level and abundance of bullshit talking points. I hope for the sake of the country that there are people in the NSA with a better level of knowledge and intelligence than what is reflected in that document.

Of course they watch online forums. They would be stupid not to. There is a lot of info that flows through them.

It is possible, but exceptionally unlikely, that any of our posts here land us in any trouble. They'd have to want to get you for something else and not have enough evidence to actually use anything from a message board. And the problem with using stuff from message boards is that if this became public knowledge it would harm their operations since it would make people think twice abut what they post.

There was an insanely popular message board from some years back called http://www.discovervancouver.com. It was ailmed art Vancouverites, who went there to talk about all sorts of shit. There is actually some quite strong evidence that the entire site was started and run by CSIS (Sort of the Canadian version of the NSA). For one thing it disappeared literally overnight, despite the the web address obviously being worth a very large amount of money due the boards incredible popularity.

Also, it is not really controversial, or in the realms of conspiracy theory, to say that a lot of the mini (and maxi) revolutions in Eastern Europe and North Africa in the past years were inflamed by Western groups (perhaps intelligence/state agencies, but this is unclear) who used message boards, facebook, twitter and the like to inflame and steer protest groups in desired directions. I'm thinking especially of Easter Europe and the colour revolutions where the movements almost certainly got support and cover from groups connected to George Soros.

But at the end of the day intelligence agencies actions on any message board are unlikely to have a material effect on any of us. They'd really have to want to get at you for some reason. Not going along with current views on gender relations is not going to be near enough.

Seriously, the NSA stuff is way overhyped. They are casting a wide net and collecting a lot of random info, the vast majority of which sits there without anyone ever looking at it and eventually gets deleted. That's about it. They are only actually interested in a tiny subset of that information.

I am much more concerned about information collection by Google than about the NSA because Google is interested in everyone (for ad targeting) and they are better than anyone else at storing, searching and exploiting every last shred of information about you and me.

I think it's laughable that people worry about the NSA who couldn't care less about them, but at the same time they'll have a Google account, use gmail, and stay logged in to Google while doing their searches on "interracial granny fisting" or whatever it is normal people do. You realize that Google is saving all that info and associating it with you, right?

If you want to worry about privacy, worry about that. Forget the NSA.

Like I said, they cast a wide net and try to collect as much info as they possibly can. What do they do with it then? Do you think anyone has the desire, time, or resources to go through all this unimaginable amount of data?

You talk about 1984 which is a great book, please re-read it and tell me if other than throwing the phrase "Big Brother" around, current life in the US bears a significant resemblance to what is described there. There have been and still exist societies that were actually like that -- please contemplate this truly evil fact. Societies in which a large percentage of all people were denouncers who spied on their friends and colleagues, reported them to the authorities and had them arrested, imprisoned, and often tortured and executed.

People in the West are so spoiled and so ignorant about the actual history of the last century that they are deluded that the societies in which they live bear any resemblance to these nightmare worlds. This does anger me sometimes, because I have a better understanding of what the nightmare worlds were like. But I also remind myself that most Americans luckily have no such understanding, and therefore are to be excused for making these absurd comparisons.
