RE: 18 Year Old Sues Parents for Tuition
Apparently, there is an update, but even funnier there is a Facebook page for her - "Education For Rachel"
https://www.facebook.com/educationforrachel
Article Link: http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/rachel-...21112.html
Quote:After enduring a media barrage that's lasted more than a week, Rachel Canning, the New Jersey teen who’s suing her parents for financial support, returned home to her family on Tuesday night. But the very next day Canning's lawyer demonstrated that the case is far from over by returning to court, requesting that the parents pay for a guardian to be appointed for their 18-year-old high school student.
Quote:Meanwhile, though commentary from those who believe that Rachel is simply an entitled brat is ubiquitous, there are supporters out there, too. More than 1,500 people have liked the Education for Rachel Facebook page, an effort created anonymously (and, some commenters believe, by Rachel herself) to get the Cannings to pay for college. A recent post there notes: “Not living with your parents should not be punishable by loss of a quality education, this is how messed up higher education is, and that’s not Rachel's fault.”
On the teen’s own Facebook page as well, various supporters have chimed in to take critics there to task. “All you are stupid. Let the girl sue her parents. You don't know how they treat her,” wrote one man. Another chimed in, “Rachel is an absolute hero. Anyone who would bash her is a short-sighted idiot. I hope she gets everything she wants, and more. If I owned a company, I would hire her in a New York minute and pay her whatever the hell she wants…”
I hate it when people speculate what they would do. Just like when people talk about what they would do if they had money.

RE: 18 Year Old Sues Parents for Tuition
I'm less concerned with what this story is about than how it made national news. Granted, it's weird, but this girl became famous overnight.
Are we being set-up by the one percent, so their daughter can get a reality show and/or book deal telling her side?
Because we are, in fact, being set up by Jen Salter, the woman who allegedly has the "best butt" on Instagram. That didn't just happen. She's repped by a PR firm that made it happen. Previously, they got her on national TV to talk about her nose job. When that didn't make her famous, they came up with the "best butt" promotional concept.
While I'm on the topic, I wonder the same thing about Belle Knox. While it's doubtful her parents knew of her porn past, her rise to stardom now seems like it was plotted by a PR firm -- all the while knowing her parents wouldn't be too pissed if she was hauling in the money (and according to her Twitter feed, she's the most searched porn star and now sought after by several companies). Sasha Grey got a book deal and so will Belle.
The transgressions of young girls are big business in media today. This wasn't the case ten or twenty years ago. But with Web clicks now becoming more important than newspaper subscriptions, stories are designed to be "click bait" and PR people know young girls are the way to sell "product." As such, we live in a girl-centric media landscape. This story would not have flown in 2000 much less 1990 because no editor would have deemed it worthy of space (I said this about Belle Knox, I think, on another thread but it's worth repeating).
My guess is this girl and her parents will do real well on the book deal money, payment from talk show appearances, and the possible reality series. As I've said on here before, real life has become the musical "Chicago," where the perverse has become the norm. Something about this feels staged, but I can't quite say exactly what.

DOBA,
Great point. Worse yet, it will just encourage more nonsense. More kids will do stupid shit to get attention, and more parents who shouldn't be parents will go along with it.
I posted something about increasing woman's studies majors (I imagine more people are majoring in it), leads to the need for more professors, leads to more tenured professors (really just feminists), by having permanent jobs they can just go nuts, make more noise and draw more attention, thus encouraging more girls to be feminists, more feminists means more chicks majoring in women studies. Cycle repeats.
It is just about money and attention.

Good points, but it's actually worse than you imagine.
They don't have to major in it. They take a few courses in it, have their heads twisted and go straight into journalism. Hence, the woman-as-victim narrative you see in so many stories (somehow Belle Knox became a victim after writing an essay and pretty much daring people to out her).
I've worked in newsrooms with women and men who are fed the blue pill through these women's studies courses. Their way of thinking is a lethal mix of do-gooder Christianity mixed with feminism.
This often leads to unintentionally hilarious cognitive dissonance. When foul-mouthed mogul Sam Zell took over the Chicago Tribune, he gave one of his salty speeches to the newsroom (the video was briefly on YouTube). When he finished, an editor asked him how he could use such words, especially around women! Gee, but I thought women were equal and able to work right alongside men, dude.
It's this mindset that gives you these stories week after week.
