In the aftermath of 9/11 - all pilot doors on airplanes have been locked making access to them nearly impossible for other people on the plane.

But in light of the recent missing airplane - I wonder if such a feature may have contributed in some way to what happened on the plane?

Back in 2006 - The Guardian ran an interesting article on the dangers of having the pilots sealed off from the rest of the plane.

Below is the key quote from the article:

But September 11 caused a panic reaction. Locked doors were hastily installed on planes all over the world despite a warning from the then US national transportation safety board vice-chairwoman, Carol Carmody.

In Bolt Action, the terrorist is a member of the cabin crew, which allows him to access the cockpit where he poisons the pilot and co-pilot, and then bolts the door.

Locked doors to the cockpit is pretty stupid I'll say, and easy to get around.

"We're going to kill a hostage every minute you don't open up, and we're starting with the flight attendants."

Sounds like a plot point to a Liam Neeson movie.

Yeah this only makes sense if the highjackers are the pilots.

As for killing everyone on board until they open.... With what? A butter knife? Surely some Rambo wannabe will manage to punch them in the back of the head and take control again.
Then you have to morality issue of do the pilots risk letting everyone die so they can land and have the highjackers arrested... Or do they hand over the whole fucking plane to a bunch of terrorists?

Although I agree with that...

The point is that the pilot is actually the terrorist.

But in that case... I'd rather risk 2/3 pilots being a terrorist than 200+ people on the plane.

Numbers game.

You know, there was a 24 episode where Jack Bauer managed to crawl into the cargo hold and hijack the plane via the spine (cabling controlling the flaps).

I always wondered if it was possible to do such a thing on a plane.
