Has anyone done one of these lately for a job?

I just had one before, it went terribly. There was no person on the other end. A text question would come up on the screen and you would instantly have to give an articulate answer while staring at your webcam and a flashing number would count down on the screen.

It's hard to be natural and flow normally in that sort of situation. I want to get to a point where I work for myself and don't have to worry about this HR BS but am finishing college this year so would like to get some experience first.

HAHA sounds like you were a contestant on Jeopardy... If you are sort of rattled after that experience, then it's likely that all the other people who interviewed were too so don't get too upset. Definitely weird though, every computer interview I have had was through Skype.

It's another way that corporations end up screwing over the younger generation. If you have tried looking for a job recently, it's no longer enough submitting resumes to HR ... even if you are well connected. They want you to spend hours sitting in front of a computer re-entering all of your qualifications and reformatting everything on your resume into their proprietary systems. It's a nightmare if you don't already have connections there and frustrating if you already do.

I'm sure the people watching all of these tapes won't be women in HR who disqualify on superficial bases.

Agreed. I hate the 'progress' recruiting seems to have made in recent years. Every company wants a monkey dance in front of a camera before you see anyone face to face or even have a human conversation.

I have also observed that it's no longer enough to provide a copy of your academic transcript, you have to waste time entering all your results (often since you were early in high school) into each individual system. I understand that this probably allows for easier comparisons but when you have university assessments, work and other commitments on top of this and psychometric testing and other BS it grates.

I might be coming across as entitled but I suspect that when companies have such sterile and impersonal recruitment procedures it might provide some insight into how it is to be "worker 7548" on the inside.

Any company that cannot respect you (or the role you're interviewing for) enough to have a person talk to you (video or not) does not deserve stellar employees.

This is slightly off topic but in the realm, I guess.

I once administered an “audio” interview to Chicago cops for the Seargeant exam.

That was a fucking riot; these guys were a pissed off bunch. Maybe comes with the territory.

I had to literally play a video on my laptop, pause it on cue and then turn on a tape recorder to record their response.

This was 2007, no lie.

The scenario was a house burning down or some shit and people going batshit and asking the cops a bunch of questions.

Most guys couldn’t even think on their feet (meaning they told a civilian that they had to check with their “captain” instead of diffusing the situation)

One dude was "johnny on the spot" like he prepared for that shit; but that was out of like 5 dudes I interviewed.

Now I’m wondering, is it really that difficult to have a live interviewer do this especially when these guys..umm..serve and protect…

Had to do it once. I hated it. As you mention, you don't know who will be watching and it just feels robotic. I'm not a fucking news anchor... Just call me for 30 min and be done with it.
