What drives a man to kill himself and his family?

What drives a man to kill himself and his family?
I've been hearing more and more of this on the news lately... Obviously very bad but sometimes understandable IMO. Read a story a few weeks ago about how a rich banker slaughtered his wife and 2 kids and ultimately himself.

Its not a new thing by any means. its an ugly part of society which it has chosen to cover up, sort of like matricide. if the truth is too ugly to bear just shove it under the rug.

Dad believes he has caused some grievous, unfixable calamity to befall his family--typically bankruptcy, sex scandal, divorce, or other social disaster. So he resolves to spare his family and himself from what he considers an unbearable shame.

Not endorsing such actions, but it seems the (twisted) mindset underlying it is comprehensible.
