Hey all,
I was wondering what you think is a reasonable amount of money to pay a foreign language tutor? (She is a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese, who is also very fluent in English -- the English fluency is key to me, because my Portuguese sucks)

The tutor is a cute girl (maybe a 7.5 or 8) from Brazil, 24 years old. Of course, I will try for the "swoop" (G Manifesto has a great post on his blog about swooping language tutors! Thanks, G!). But if that fails, I'm wondering about the next step. Like if I should stick with her and pay her. (She wants $35 per hour.) What do you guys think? Would you pay some cute girl 35 bucks an hour for foreign language instruction? To me, it sounds a little much, but maybe that is a reasonable hourly rate for language tutors? I don't know, as I don't have any experience with any tutors/instructors. The other thing I was thinking was that if she is not interested in getting together outside of "class," and if I stuck with her and paid her $35/hr., then it would be like I'm rewarding her for rejecting me?? Do you guys have any opinions or perspectives on how you'd handle this situation? I guess this is a money question and a language question and a game question all in one...

i pay $25 per hour for my spanish tutor and she is excellent both in terms of looks and how she helps me learn.

It makes sense to get the best value for money out of your language tuition if that's what you're going for.

By all means try to slam her, but don't let that cloud your judgement when it comes to learning more efficiently.

Is this in the U.S.? $35 is high unless she is bringing custom materials or traveling far. Bargain her down to $25 with some package deal (10 hours or more).

35 an hour is ridiculous. You might as well have her throw some sex in there as well. I am looking at an ad where they charge about 5 bucks an hour for Spanish tutoring although I usually go to meetup groups in the dot where I can talk to other Spanish speakers for free...

Hey thanks you guys! I appreciate it. Yes, this is in the U.S., and I think $35/hr is too high to pay her. I will see what I can do in terms of the swoop, and also a lower hourly rate.

Hey guys, where's the best place to find French tutors that can teach remotely, like Skype for example? I'm looking to take on a tutor for my upcoming trip to Montreal and France.

I'm also looking for wanna those, till I find one I'm sticking to Live Mocha to learn basic French

Luckly I'm finding quite easy to learn French,It's similar to portuguese.Does you Anglophones find it hard to learn Latin Languages?

Have you tried using a search engine or speaking to people locally to see what the going rate is in your geographic market?

Yup. French/Portuguese are VERY similar, much like Spanish. All Latin languages.

You guys say Rua, the French say Rue.

So, I find it very easy to learn too.

I'm going to have to go outside the grain here, and say don't try and bang her, assuming you view her as your best option for a language tutor.
Either you will be accepted and will bang, or will be rejected, but either way, that pretty much shuts the door on having an effective class experience with her.
I would say don't pay any private tutor at all. Just download the torrent for Rosetta Stone Brazilian Portuguese. Or pay a thousand bucks plus for it,k whatever floats your boat. It's great. Spend a lot of time self study with that, and then find a conversation partner for free, either in person or via skype to work on oral fluency.

i made this mistake this week. I had private spanish lessons in La Paz/ Bolivia and tried to date the teacher, i went to the cinema with her and tried to kiss her which she denied twice. She´s very conservative but liked the flirting. After this there was a tension between us in the following lessons. Better find an ugly one who gives you good lessons and use you´re language knowledge to pick up other girls.

I used rosetta stone a while, it good for learning the words but not for making a conversation

If you're just interested in the language and not the swoop, complete waste of money.

There are plenty of people, in Brazil, that would be happy to tutor u in their language over skype as long as 50% of the time it will be in English so they can practice theirs. Check out the skype forum.
