A video I came across on a news site. Apparently an older Taiwanese man bashed this foreigner's head in for not giving up his seat to him, and also because he was with a Taiwanese girl. I'm not sure if the guy died or not but the comments on news sites and the youtube comments seem to be overwhelmingly in support for the Taiwanese man that assaulted the foreigner.. no surprise.

Thoughts on this? I wonder if anyone else in Taiwan or Asia has experienced something similar.

Died? Dude looked fine, just cowardly.

Never had anything remotely close to that happen. On a train, sober, well lit? No way. Wasn't exactly a sneak attack outside of a club when you're hammered. Old man would have been on his ass way before he was able to split me open. The old man assumed this dude for a punk, and he was right. I doubt he would try this on any man who was obviously confident, with his head held high, chest out and shoulders back.

If someone comes up to you aggressively, ALWAYS be ready to attack first, and NEVER let them get within striking range. If someone's being aggressive towards me and they come into striking range, they are getting attacked first. I've made the mistake of not doing that one time in my life, and I ended up with a broken jaw from one punch I didn't expect. I'll never make that mistake again.

Guy looks fine. Question is what really happened. Was it not giving the seat or did the guy say something snarky. Too many guys pop off something unnecessary just to satisfy the ego. You ever see a crazy person get on a bus just mouthing off etc everyone just looks down and tries to avoid eye contact. No need to go stirring the pot.

That old man seems pissed and he was the one that bashed the guy's head in. To clarify you would think if he took an unjustified swing at the guy he might just hit and run. But he is angry and sticking around to let him know how angry he is.. So I am guessing puss boy mouthed off. Not giving up a seat and having an ugly gf doesn't usually get you bloodshed. Loved how she acted tough by calling him a scumbag. That old geezer doesn't know what she is saying.

Judging from the comments on YouTube it seems it had something to do with jumping the line/que. The train doesn't even look full. Hard to believe they're fighting over a fucking seat.

Benade patted Chiu, 61, on his backpack and told the latter that he had cut in line, police said.

After the three got into the carriage, Chiu began abusing Benade and his wife in Taiwanese. Benade then approached Chiu to stop him, thinking that he might have meant to attack his wife, according to police.

Chiu, a construction worker, then hit Benade several times with the pliers, causing Benade to fall to the ground, bleeding profusely.

Chiu was taken to Zhuwei police station for questioning, where he told police he attacked Benade because he pushed him while they were waiting for the train.

Police said they would send Chiu to prosecutors on suspicision of attempted murder.

I think the older man just reacted in a bit rash way. He was a construction worker who went out hiking. Also by the sheer posture and built you can tell that he was more Alpha.

While it is certainly an overreaction on the side of the old dude, the Namibian man was obviously a bit careless. When meeting someone obviously masculine and battle-ready deescalation is key.

“Speaking to him about three weeks ago, he was looking forward to this competition as it was going to be an internationally recognised qualifying competition for the 2015 Paralympic World Championship which will be held in October in Doha, Qatar,” Kandjii said of the “people's person”, Benade.

She added that he plans to retire after the 2016 Olympic/Paralympic Games in Brazil, before taking up coaching to help upcoming Paralympians in the development structures.

“He was enquiring about competition dates and other information for the event in South Africa. We are not sure if this will stop him from competing next month.”

Frankly - if such a story makes national and international headlines, then it's clear that Taiwan is a ridiculously safe country.

Approaching an irate man who obviously was aggressive and not a push-over is usually a bad choice of action. He should have pulled his wife to the back and moved away.

There are two conflicting stories going around, one is the old guy skipped the queue and the foreigner called him out on it, then the old guy went batshit, the other is the opposite, with the foreigner pushing the old guy first. That said I read the old guy was arrested for attempted murder which is quite unusual considering how lax the police in Taiwan usually is.

Beneath the "Taiwanese so polite and friendly" cliche there is a lot of pent up anger and resentment for foreigners in Taiwan including among older people. Locals are already hard at work in article comments and on Facebook calling the victim's local wife a slut for marrying a foreigner.

That said even though this stuff comes up in the news all the time (and you hear stories about foreigners getting beat up in front of clubs for talking to the wrong girl every now and then) the most aggressive any Taiwanese has ever been to me was when some guy hoverhanded a girl to shield her from me in a club. Don't ever be confrontational or get involved in shit and you'll be fine.

I would argue that a Chinese person would be pissed at what you said. Almost every single Chinese person I have spoken to (including my ex-gf) all feel Taiwan is part of China.

As for the cutting thing. If that was the case, I'd be curious to see how they would react in South Korea where it is the norm for senior citizens to cut in front of people withOUT hesitation.

I'm all for inappropriate jokes if they're actually relevant to the topic at hand, but this one just didn't hit the spot for me. Maybe I felt particularly defensive since people can't even tell the difference between Taiwan and Thailand in the country that I'm from and the Winston Wu-style Taiwan bashing on RVF has been on the rise in the past few weeks.

We have plenty of great RVF parties here actually, so if anyone feels like coming here in spite of the barbarian line-cutters, MRT murderers and girls unwilling to immediately suck dick after presenting a US passport, we'll be glad to show you around. It's a cool place to be.

Line cutting sucks. It's the reason why I always arrived very early anywhere if I had to us a train station or bus. I awlays stand in the Bus and subway to avoid drama. I also would always give up my seat for the old people, the few times I did sit down. Even getting a chance to sit after miles of walking for 5 mins is worth it to get the throb out of my legs. Hehe. I never had issues doing it like this.

South Koreans cut in line worse than Chinese do. A few hit me in my back.

We can also file this video under Chinese men are not weak, like the ones you see on TV or the West folder as well. Who knew headbussas lived in Taiwan! Ok I'll stop now.

This is really unusual behavior for Taiwanese. There's a whole lot of amusing youtube videos of passenger rage in Taipei or Kaoshiung. Most people in both of those cities are so docile it's ridiculous. I get more attitude in Bangkok on an average day than in Taipei which is to say it's not much for either city.

I think the problem is we didn't see the beginning of this video. Any number of exchanges could have happened. I'm guessing someone mouthed off and got smashed. Old Taiwanese man is saying "fuck your mother" over and over again. If you know Taiwanese people on subways that just doesn't happen out of the blue, friends.

Just think about this for a minute..prior to the 2000's it would have been unheard of for a tourist to get hacked to death by a taxi driver wielding a katana in Asia. These days in Bangkok people kind of shrug, locals and foreigners alike, at this sort of news these days.

What has changed?

The answer is you have a lot of shitheads abroad in Asia from the west too. For every culturally well attuned RVF poster you have 10 shitheads acting like they own the place propping their feet up on the cultural table.

This tends to affect local attitudes in a variety of ways. Some countries become downright homicidal (Thailand) or they start to get really pissy (Korea), coldly indifferent (Japan) or they may end up trending that way (Taiwan.)

My friend had a similar thing happen to him in Japan.

Was minding his own business on the train when some drunk old guy started harassing him. Long story short, the old guy smashed him in the face several times while he was off guard.

My friend is easily big enough to kill the old man on the spot, but instead he called the guard and eventually got a load of compensation. Wise move. Generally in any altercation, the foreigner will be judged guilty anyway. If it's another foreigner, then go ahead and beat him to the pulp. The authorities won't care.

Either way, these incidents are extremely rare in Taiwan. It's not a xenophobic place at all. People shouldn't get the wrong impression from one asshole's behaviour.

Somebody said up there it's a 1/10 ratio for RVF type guys to dipshits in Asia. Well in Thailand I would rate that at 1/100 at least. I have no opinion on foreigners in Taiwan but sometimes I really don't blame Thailand for some of their resentment.

I have watched 2 episodes of this cringe worthy show, and even though it's reality tv, these assholes really exist in Thailand by the fucking thousands.

There's less foreigners overall so you don't quite get the mass of obnoxious idiots from the tourist demographic. The local expats or semi long business stay guys are usually very lame though. Try reading some expat forums about Taiwan if you want an idea on how some of these guys think. It's pretty bad especially forumosa.com. I checked it out once and it was full of old retards.

Plus Bkk is the big hub airport to SEA so the grimy backpackers usually start out here on the horrible "Banana Pancake Trail".

Because of the way Thai culture values harmony over confrontation, it gives douchbags like this guy a pass. Being a douche he interprets this as validation and acts more of a douche.
