She told Newsbeat: "Jazz hands are used throughout NUS in place of clapping as a way to show appreciation of someone's point without interrupting or causing disturbance, as it can create anxiety.

"I'm relatively new to this and it did feel odd at first, but once you've used jazz hands a couple of times it becomes a genuinely nice way to show solidarity with a point and it does add to creating a more inclusive atmosphere."

I agree with the overqualified spinster here; I mean, what goes better with cookies and play-dough than jazz hands?

I've really got nothing to add to this one; I'm sure some of you guys will more eloquently and humorously rip the story to shreds. Still, women in academia really is the gift that keeps giving!

jazz hands are when they lift their arms up and shake them? to prevent trauma from the person speaking or the person clapping? seriously, I can't tell what their point is, if we need to prevent girls from injuring their hands while clapping, or to prevent speakers from being traumatized by having people applaud them. Both notions are equally ridiculous

Jazz Hands were popularised by Al Jolson in 'The Jazz Singer' in 1927, the first 'talkie', where he sings in blackface. The wiggling fingers were a cliché of Black and White Minstrel Shows.

They've just managed to pull off simultaneous cultural appropriation and racism.

It's certainly unfortunate if something as common as people clapping triggers anxiety.

I can definitely related, because I some crossed wires in my brain that are triggered by seemingly normal everyday noises and cause me to experience intense waves of fight or flight emotions every time I hear them.

But that's too fucking bad, because that's my problem and not everyone else's. Just like we can't ask that every service counter be lowered to 1 foot off the ground because midgets exist, if you have an extremely uncommon form of anxiety, you'll just have to find a way to deal with it, even if that means staying away from events that may include applause.

Life is tough, but if you're in a position to make such requests, your life is already much better than some peasant in Bhutan. Learn to deal with it, rather than making unreasonable requests.
