Lifestyle Magazine for Attention Whores
Hi,

I'm thinking about launching an online magazine and wanted to ask about your opinion on it:

So basically it would be an online magazine on "internet attention whores" - covering girls who are very active online and on Instagram etc, featuring them in articles and doing interviews with them. Not only girls, though, also guys, plus some fashion, design & nightlife topics. The magazine would be targeted to a specific niche group/scene.

What do you think about it? On one hand it's kinda wack to give these people a platform and support them in their attention whoring, but on the other hand there is potentially a big audience for it, and it's easy to get good visuals for free (i.e. the photos they post of themselves online - they put a lot of time & energy into that). Down the line one could also sell merch on the website. Also, it's probably pretty easy to find inters who work for free when the magazine reaches a certain popularity.

Good idea or no?

Well all types of possibilities: fashion brands, mainstream magazines, maybe drinks brands, maybe tech/gadgets (e.g. headphone manufacturers etc.), nightlife venues etc.

Ok.

The reason I asked is that this is ultimately all that matters when considering a publication of any type.

Yeah you're right. I think though if you target the magazine to a specific niche and manage to get a certain popularity in that niche, it shouldn't be too hard to get advertising. Especially if that demographic is interesting for advertisers.

The only question is how much that advertising would actually pay - I think the rates for online advertising are pretty low. But maybe there are other possibilities for tie-ins, maybe selling actual products (clothing, design objects etc.).

This is why this forum is gold: Instead of complaining about attention whores someone asks, "How can we make money off them?"

It's the attitude of success.

I suggest borrowing a book from the library on how to do a business plan, draft a plan on this idea, and then pay someone who reviews business plans for a living to look over yours and tell you about any flaws with it. This is a giant pain in the neck to do, but believe me it will save you a lot of frustration in the future.

Interesting idea. I think it does has potential. It's like "curation" for nice ass. Instead of looking for all those social websites, you could simply go to mememe.com (or whatever you want to call it). I have a friend who follow some very nice chicks on Instagram. Not something I would do but there is a huge public.

I respectfully disagree with this point. Very often others will laugh at your business plan as they don't understand the opportunity. People have done so with all my ideas and my very first made me close to $250k.

Just jump into it. Begin right away. You'll learn tones. Then when you get stuck or as you go along seek out the advice of people doing similar things whom may have come across similar problems.

Learning by doing is the best method. Sure, don't avoid planing. But seeking the advice of 'proffesionals' may simply dissuade you from ever starting.

The purpose of having someone review your business plan isn't to sign-off on the validity of your idea, it's to make sure your plan is solid, i.e. that you didn't leave anything out and you have all the bases covered. You're the one who decides, after you research and write your plan, whether it's a viable idea or not.

Approach the brands that back these people; protein powder, sports clothes, headphone etc. Whatever they are promoting in their photos is giving them the revenue so ask them for their numbers (the sponsors) and get in touch with them directly. Say you will be doing full interviews on the people they sponsor on Instagram and this will be another way to get the word out on their products.

Skip a magazine and go straight to a big wall poster that doubles up as something useful for the people into that product - for a fitness girl I would recommend a sample exercise and diet plan poster someone can put on the wall. On the front is a big pic of her with the workout plan and of course all the sponsors info. On the back is the full interview and more details on your advertisers.

Stick five together and sell as a poster magazine to young people or approach sport stores/gyms and sell it as a free good to customers. You make the money off the advertisers up front so there is no gamble. The more you move the more they pay you so might as well send it out for free. They cover printing plus X amount for units moved.

Instagram girl - free publicity
Sponsors - advertising to a bigger audience with more detail
Gyms/stores - free give away
You - profit and some access to hot girls

Great idea and nearly all stages can be done up front for very little or free. Poster links to your Instagram page which links to the different brands and different people you interviewed. Grow your own brand too on the platform to bring in more girls and better known people.

After a while the brand will grow itself. Change it up with 'winter/summer' work out plans and keep it relevant.

That's my quick brain storm anyway.

If you want an idea on how much more profitable posters are then magazines read about the Bruce Lee posters Dennis Felix did in 'How to Get Rich'. It started his whole empire.

Hi Atlantic,

thanks a lot for your ideas - sounds definitely very cool. It's a very good idea to approach sponsors to pay for the production cost in advance.

The only thing I'm a bit unsure about is the posters - are people today still interested in posters? To me it seems like posters were more like an 80ies / 90ies thing. I would have to look a bit more into it, but I just feel like posters are a bit out of fashion today.
