Is tanning or going out in the sun really so dangerous as people make it out to be?

Like srsly everyone I know tans in the summer or goes out unprotected and none have gotten skin cancer.Both of my parents tan a lot and never did so far and when you look at people in their 20s a lot of them tan too.

Why are then some people so obsessed with never tanning and always wearing protective clothes,etc. to not get skin cancer?
Is there really a big risk of you getting skin cancer or are all of these things pointless to worry about since the chance is probably not even 1%.

Unless you want leathery skin that looks like dying cow hide, you should probably use sunscreen. Is this really a question...?
