I'm not here it discuss whether or not I think the IQ test is legitimate, although I believe it is. I'm wondering if any of you guys have ever taken one, and whether or not the results turned out to be what you had expected. I took one once as a kid, when I first moved with my parents, and I was temporally enrolled in a public school. I tested at 121, which is the bare cutoff for the gifted program, and I felt like a village idiot compared to some of the higher-level kids. Although, today, at age 23 and out of school, I feel like I'm clever compared to most guys I meet, but not intelligent.
Just wondering if anyone else had the test done. I took mine at the medical center at UCLA, so it was legitimate.

I took it almost 10 years ago when I was about to enter high school, so my parents paid the fee. I was tested at the neurology clinic of a prestigious public university and the cost was $3,500. I do think it's worth it, though, as you'll get a full break down of your score for verbal, spacial, etc.

Apparently I did when I was younger, but my parents didn't tell me the results.

I scored in the 99th percentile on every standardized test I've ever taken, but having known and worked with a few actual geniuses I know I'm not one of them. That's good enough for me.

Yes, I've taken several and it did get me enrolled at a well respected university as a high school student. I did the math prodigy thing for a few years but it's honestly more of a party trick than anything substantial. Weambulance's parents had the right idea. No kid needs to go through that.

Agreed,if anything it creates potentially unrealistic expectations,both from others as from oneself,and this latter case is the true trageday

I doubt it. It was an extensive test and we paid for two write up reports from the neurologists to present to the head of education at my high school.

121, as stated above. I don't remember the exact breakdown, but I scored highest in the visual spacial and number section (rotating shapes, finding the next number in the logical sequence). This is typically male.

Maybe somewhere between $50 and $80 if you do it in a group setting.

The test paper itself is not that expensive. You need someone responsible to supervise it, a registered psychologist for example. They will score your test and also make sure that no one is making unauthorized copies of the questions.

I took the test on a couple of occasions with the aim of getting into Mensa. I figured being a member would be useful for networking in my field.

As a kid, I would have cleared the hurdle for Mensa no problem. As an adult, I missed my first shot at the pass mark and I had to study a bit to pass the second one. Got a boost on the second one when they used a test that was entirely mathematical and not verbal.

Not sure why I feel like a fucking idiot half the time, and the other half the time everyone else is a fucking idiot.

Personally, I wouldn't want to know what my exact IQ is. What's the point? If it's higher than you expected, it'll bloat your ego. If it's lower, it'll psychologically drag you down. Not to mention the multiple different types of IQ that a paper exam can't test for...

I maxed such a test at 18. High intelligence is rather a handicap in life as few people can relate to your interests and their interests are often boring. It often comes with some quirky mutations as well (attention disorder in my case). If I remember well the most successful men score around 120-130.

I took a test online recently and got 129 considered "Very Superior". Its gone up through the years, 110 at age 15, 115 at age 17, 125 at age 23 and 129 just recently and I'm now 26.

Whatever dude, the ability to learn, creativity and self-awareness in my opinion hold much more weight. I feel like IQ tests are only testing your brain's "processing power". You can do things to upgrade the hardware (Lumosity, fish-oil) but the software (reading books, taking a SuperLearner course) is where the real application comes in. The software is really the only way you can use the hardware to its full potential but I digress.

My point is it can't test for creativity, learning ability (not comprehensively), or self-awareness. Many geniuses and Noble Prize winners scored lower than 125.

Don't take IQ tests seriously. For example it is known that Richard Feynman only had an IQ of 125, yet he is considered a genius and one of the smartest people alive in his time. And yet arguable the highest IQ score ever recorded was from Richard G. Rosner, who was a stripper and television writer.

1) Not knowing that cognitive tests administered to children are noisy (the source of Feynman's "125 IQ") and thus regurgitating this blue-pill "factoid."

2) Not knowing that the confidence and prediction intervals of linear models grow increasingly large as the independent variable values get further from their means. Standardized tests are typically capped at 3-4 z-scores for this reason. Right in Rosner's Wikipedia page there's an explanation of this.

Although IQ is no guarantee of life success no more than height is a guarantee of being good at basketball--it sure increases your odds, and also increases your options. Many high IQ people choose not to pursue "high IQ" tasks, just like many tall people choose not to pursue basketball.

A large group of randomly selected 145 IQ people will destroy a large group of randomly selected 130 IQ people in achievement. SMPY results are very evocative illustrations of this.

But do you think it would be possible for Feynman to have scored 125 if the test were heavily weighed toward the verbal side versus the logical/mathematical side?
