I searched there a couple of threads about self driving cars - but I figure with the guys here, they would want to know that in the future you may not have to meet at a bar near your place. Your logistics will be better

"That's one of several things people will do which will inhibit their ability to respond quickly when the computer says to the human, 'Take over."'

Media reports have flagged videos posted online showing Tesla drivers engaged in questionable practices, including reading a newspaper or brushing their teeth.

Federal officials, who have been tasked with building a regulatory framework to govern driverless cars, highlighted their concerns in briefing notes compiled for Transport Minister Marc Garneau soon after he took on the portfolio last fall.

"The issue of the attentive driver is ... problematic," said one note contained in a stream of emails about Tesla's so-called self-driving car.

"Drivers tend to overestimate the performance of automation and will naturally turn their focus away from the road when they turn on their auto-pilot," said the note, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.

'Questionable practices' with Tesla autopilot

Indeed, the notes cite media reports of videos posted online showing Tesla drivers engaged in questionable practices, including reading a newspaper or brushing their teeth. Other videos show Tesla owners recording flaws in how the car's autopilot system reacts to changes in road markings.

Tesla did not respond to requests for an interview, but the company makes clear that its autopilot feature gives cars only partial autonomy in order to make the car significantly more safe than those driven by humans alone.

Transport Canada hadn't tested the Tesla, but had taken other semi-autonomous vehicles out for a spin, including the Mercedes C-Class and the Infiniti Q50, the documents show.

"It really needs to be emphasized that these vehicles are not truly self-driving," say officials, who predict that fully autonomous cars and trucks are "still a few years away."

Current Canada motor vehicle safety standards don't prohibit driverless vehicles on the country's roadways.

But last month's federal budget included money for Transport Canada to develop regulations around automated vehicle design.

Those regulations, at least initially, would require that the vehicles are equipped with a "failsafe mechanism that can respond to situations when the driver is not available," said the briefing notes.

Ontario also set out some regulations, including a requirement that an expert in autonomous vehicles be in the driver's seat and able to assume full control at a moment's notice.

But vehicles such as the Tesla don't fall under the province's autonomous vehicle pilot program, which hit the road in January, because its autopilot feature is already covered under regulations that govern the use of such technologies as self-parallel parking and brake assist.

Ensuring that a driver who may not have been paying attention to his or her surroundings can suddenly control a vehicle may be easier said than done, said Kirk.

"People will not be able to respond in time."

Federal officials also suggest autonomous vehicles be equipped with so-called "black box" data recorders, similar to devices found in larger aircraft.

I predict that self driving cars will not decrease the actual amount of accidents and injuries. They will make accidents more uncontrollable and random trough also make transportation slower and more boring.


The real reason Google pushes these is for humans to have even more time to be integrated into virtual reality. Also total control.

I don't think those self driving cars would work very well in any major city with heavy traffic. In rural areas without a lot of other cars on the road, sure they could work.

I think they would work better in major cities than our current system. I picture perfect synchronization of all automobiles at traffic signals (even with traffic signals). No idiots trying to be that last car and partially blocking an intersection. No lag time for accelerating at a green light. Merging problems are synchronized. Routes are optimized.

Of course, reality is probably much worse than theory. It would take universal usage of these cars as well no bugs in the system. That is to say nothing of a catastrophic system failure (or hack).

One can but hope that SSS's title proves correct. God knows it can't get any more lethal than it is already. The fact that our expert thinks this is something to be 'warned' about, rather than to be exalted, suggests he has never found himself doing 100+ mph down the motorway after midnight, with a girl in his lap going like a diesel driven donut, and something equally hard and nasty screaming over the speakers.

What's the point of self driving cars if you need to remain constantly vigilant and ready to take over at any moment? What benefit is there in that scenario, one where the car kind of drives itself but I kind of need to be ready?

If I need to watch traffic as normal and be prepared to react then I might as well completely control it myself, just as now. This semi-automation is the worst of both worlds.

Until I'm just a passive passenger in my own car, able to bang to my hearts content, this technology is pointless and most likely dangerous, further turning the driving population into retards. The amount of people that can't even parallel park is amazing.

One of my bucket list items is to be the first person to get a DUI in a driverless car.

It will have to be in Hawaii so its easy to get out of. I would like to get the DUI at a checkpoint.

The law says you have to be physically operating the vehicle. There will be tons of precedents set. I will have "Konas Law" like Megan.
