I find the reasons those answers work well is you are telling her I don't give a fuck what you think about my job, and you won't be able to put me into little categories where you already have decided something about me based on that category.

Let's say a guy is an "Alpha" but his job is sitting in one of those little cubby holes in the bank answering peoples questions about why their debit card doesn't work and why the bank charged them fees etc. If he answers "I am a customer service supervisor at Bigbox Bank" the girl will immediately apply her mindless stereotypes to him and unconsciously start one of several reactions that may differ wildly based on her needs:

Boring guy reaction
Boost my linkedin reaction
Single mom paycheck alert reaction
Friendzone reaction

So lets say that same guy answers, "What do I do? Well until an hour ago when I came to this coffee shop I was working on my muscle car, how about you what do you do?"

This leaves her no way to activate one of the stupid "professional" or programmed reactions, and instead she has to deal with you as a MAN instead of a JOB.

The response to these types of questions should never be the actual answer. I'm in school so the question is always "what's your major?" It's a typical conversation question and comes up with every new girl, so why waste the opportunity to have a little fun and joke around? Game is about having fun, right?

"leisure studies"
"triple major in women's studies, gender studies, and african studies"
"math major with a minor in exotic dancing"

With work the formula is similar: anything outlandish, sarcastic, and obviously not true.

"dog walker"
"garbage man"
"ass model"
"itch cream tester"

the list goes on. Just don't tell them your real job the first time they ask. Second time, you can joke around again or actually tell them. If they ask a third time just tell them and move on.

I've always thought it's a very strange question to be asked, especially so early in meeting someone, as happens in the USA/CAN/AUS/UK. It doesn't really happen near as much outside the anglosphere

For some reason people in these places have come to associate what you do to earn money with the essential "you-ness", instead of your interests or personality etc. Which is strange

Besides that, it's a very personal question. You are basically being asked "how do you make your money".

It's one aspect of our culture (among many) that I particularly dislike.

Side question.. why do guys still worry whether this question is some big sneaky shit test? That must be the case since there are threads about good answers. It's just a question. There are certain questions that almost every human being will ask you within first 10 minutes, what do you do? where do you go to school? who are you here with? Even guys ask me that rather quickly even though they don't really want to befriend me or anything. It's just what people automatically ask when they meet someone new.

If you want to do it "right" then describe what you actually do in an interesting and original way [including her in that short story is cool] and you're good. Coming up with silly shit is fine maybe once, but after 2nd time or more the girl sees you're hiding something out of fear which is worse than saying something boring.

Yep, Western women don't make a lot of bones about saying "Would you show me the Carfax already?"

I've tried using silly "one liners" about my job and my age like this before. But in my experience - women are hip to this. There's a pretty good chance they're just going to think you're insecure, or hiding something in a bad way, rather than being "mysterious" if you don't play it just right.

Regarding age questions here's what I plan on doing from now on: Just tell them my real age, and then turn it back around, because I find it to be slightly offensive when a girl asks this after knowing me for only ten minutes. She likely wouldn't stand for it if the tables were reversed.

"I'm thirty <real number>. But I'm pretty sure you knew that I'm in my 30s. Is that last digit something that deeply concerns you? (intentional ambiguity as to who we're talking about now)"

Regarding work, I'd just explain to them what I really do, but in an indirect fashion which makes them curious.

"I'd tell you all about it, but it would take a while, and it seems more like you're out to have fun tonight than hear me go on about it. But I'll tell you this: I love it, and I hope I never have to retire. They'll have to pry my tools out of my cold hands!"

I haven't tried the first "line" yet, but I've said a variant of the second on first dates with two girls from online, who seemed particularly curious about my work. Both of them ended up "good dates", so there ya go. YMMV.

One factor for me is how "fun" the atmosphere is. If it's a foam party and we're on the dance floor that tells me one thing. If I'm at morning meeting for fellow white collar professionals, that tells me something else.

The veteran recognizes not only the question, but the SUB-COMMUNICATION.

2) What's the interaction been like so far?
When does this question come up?
Is this immediately after I started talking to her?
Is she trying to screen me out?
Is it hostile in nature?
Is she looking at me like I'm the sun, and she's really enamored?
Is she seeking rapport?
Is she just passing the time?
How serious is she about getting an answer?

3) Will my literal answer change her mood?
Will it sub-com the wrong thing?

Through reading WIA's post I actually forgot this thread was even about how to answer the banal "what do you do?" question...

That's powerful.

The biggest takeaway from what WIA is saying here is don't treat it like some shit test you have to "pass" - treat as just another great opportunity to flirt with her, joke around, get her smiling, get her touching you, etc. You can do all of these things and the question she asked is 100% irrelevant and you likely never answered it and she likely completely forgot she even asked you.

That's game. Taking stock conversation and making it fun and building a connection with it.
