Saw this today. Another casualty of the Marriage-Divorce industry. Perhaps there's some lessons to be learned when it comes to financially managing windfalls. What advice would you give a friend like Eddie (besides the obvious "don't get married"?

Eddie the Eagle, the skijump underdog who won global support when he came last in the 1988 Winter Olympics, is living in a garden shed surviving on egg sandwiches after being “wiped out” by his wife.

Michael “Eddie” Edwards revealed the divorce from his wife, Samantha Morton, has taken about 85% of his wealth, including the £180,000 he earned for the film starring Hugh Jackman .

“I moved into the shed in my garden while developing my new house. I’ve lived off sandwiches ever since, as I don’t have a kitchen,” he said.

“If you think about it too much, you get depressed, so I think, ‘I made it once, I made it twice, I can make it three times.’”

Despite becoming an unlikely global celebrity in 1988, Eddie was declared bankrupt in 1992, claiming the trust fund into which he had put his earnings had not been properly managed.

He later earned a law degree from De Montfort University in Leicester.

This year the biopic of his life, starring Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman and Christopher Walken and based on a memoir Edwards wrote in 1988, earned the former Olympian a six-figure pay cheque.

Edwards told the Sunday Times: “I had to give all that to my ex-wife. I still haven’t paid the tax on it. I’ve had to sell my flat in Bedford, which I bought about 30 years ago, to pay my anticipated tax bill.”

He will also have to pay capital gains on the £175,000 property.

“At least 90% of the money in my account is earmarked for tax,” he said.

Edwards, 52, was married to Morton for more than 10 years, before the divorce was finalised this year. They have two young daughters.

“My barrister argued that I signed the film rights 17 years ago and only met my wife about 10 years ago. But they said no. If they had tried to make the film this year, I’d have been fine - the divorce would have been sorted. Because we had children, and other factors, I ended up losing 85%. I’m wiped out.”

In between sponsorship and speaking engagements he has gone back to working as a plasterer - his original trade.

Could be a naive question (and it's coming from someone who's never been married), but how much difference would a pre-nup make in the UK, given the common law man and wife legal issue?

British law can circumvent or ignore it but I'm not completely sure.

This is why he was taken to the cleaners.

Not that it doesn't happen to childless men, but those who do have kids can expect a biblical-level flood that washes away all hard-earned wealth and property unless he is living like Jeremiah Johnson out in the wilderness of Canada.

If I didn't know better, I'd suspect the Powers That Be just do not want white men to have kids and/or stable families or for that matter, any kind of happiness at all.

Muslims on the other hand...

Just read up a bit and its a clusterfuck for men. British courts have discretion in enforcing the terms of a prenup and only refer to it for 'loose guidance'.

Why do men still get married down there?

Why don't you guys get sth else on paper other than the Magna Carta????

This type of incident isn't even surprising. Stories like this should be taught as modern day parables to young males growing up in the west.

This guy doesn't sound like the sharpest tool either though. Going bust in just 4 years in 1992 from putting all your money into a sketchy trust during the start of one of the most legendary bull market runs in history..heh.

First off, how is he cooking the eggs for the egg sandwiches? Is he just cracking eggs on bread? He's gotta have something. Whining about not having a kitchen is bullshit.

Second, why is he working as a plasterer when he has a law degree? Is he Eddie the Shitty Lawyer?

So you lost 180 grand, get the hell over it. That's not a lot of money, if it was two million, that's another story. Was Eddie just planned ng on sitting around until that money ran out?

Eddie the Eagle should call up the people that made the movie about him and ask them for 180 grand. Those guys got it in their back pockets.

He's not cooking anything, he's probably buying these from the store - they're the cheapest pre-packed sandwiches you can get in UK. You can get them for £1 (USD 1.33) each. 2 or 3 of them will last you a day.

Around 50% of law school graduates in UK never end up getting a job in the legal industry. It's even harder when you're over 40 like Eddie is.

180 grand is a lot of money in UK. I doubt if Eddie makes more than 30K a year now.

Why in God's name would a man keep an undue amount of wealth in an easily confiscatable form/location? For that matter, how is it that so many fucking idiots have so much money?
