I imagine wouldn't he think being a dick in prison would get his ass beat? I am all for capitalism but I think you are better off making friends in prison. This isn't The Shawshank Redemption when the main character uses his skills to gain favor and help his friends with his tax skills.

At one point, he cornered the hot chocolate market. He bought up every package of Swiss Miss from the commissary and sold it for a profit in the prison yard. He monopolized hot chocolate! He made it so that if you wanted any, you had to go through Bernie."


Fishman is the host of a new Audible series called "Ponzi Supernova," which investigates Madoff's $65 billion fraud. It includes previously unpublished interviews with Madoff and law-enforcement agents who were involved in the case.

"I sort of rationalized that what I was doing was OK," Madoff told Eugene Soltes, a professor at Harvard Business School, in an audio interview provided to Business Insider in December.

"It wasn't going to hurt anybody," Madoff said. "It was a temporary thing, and because of the success I that I've had and the money I've made for people, I sort of felt that it would just sort of be a temporary situation and acceptable."

A cunning little genius, this Madoff: looks like he anticipated the military rebellion that's underway in Ivory Coast, and which is very likely to send prices of cacao rocketing (again). Not a bad idea therefore to quickly buy and stock on chocolate...

It's probably a luxury private club retirement home prison. The worst the other prisoners will do is take away his second serving of fillet mignon, or slice of cheesecake.

For what it's worth though, one of his two sons committed suicide, and the other died of cancer recently. That money didn't bring him happiness in the end.

I heard Madoff's first day in prison went down like this:

Stepping into his cell for the first time Bernie sees Bubba, a big honkin 6'6" , 340lb mountain of country brutha, laying on his cot.

Bernie: "Hi. I'm Bernie Madoff"

Bubba doesn't get up or even open his eyes but in deep bass voice :

Bubba: "So...you wants to be da husband o you wants to be da wife?"

Bernie: "I'm sorry...what?"

Bubba: *sighs* clearly having been down this road before he summons patience and enunciates each word slowly so he will be understood "So...does.. you ..wants.. to.. be.. da ..husband.. o ..does.. you.. wants.. to.. be.. da.. wife?"

Bernie: "Uh...errr...no thank you...neither"

Bubba finally stands up towering down looks at Bernie and again booms "So...you wants to be da husband o you wants to be da wife?!!!"

Bernie realizing a decision HAS to be made does a quick calculus in his head considering the technical and logistics of the deal to be struck and...

Bernie: "Uhhh...ok...I'd like to be the husband "

Bubba: Calming down as he undoes his pants "Aight den...get ova here and suck yo wife's dick"

Anyway, this seems like an excellent coda to the discussion we had several months ago about the utility of a high IQ in one's everyday life. There's only one way this story ends: with Bubba (IQ 75) stomping away with arms full of hot chocolate, while Madoff (IQ 155) picks his bloody teeth off of the snowy ground in the prison courtyard, mumbling as the blood pours through his lips, "He can't punch me! That isn't maximally rational!"

He's in a medium security prison, I doubt he has any fillet mignon or cheesecake and if you think there is no violence happening in a medium security prisons you would be wrong. You make it sound like it's some sort of vacation resort, I don't think anyone here would want to spend ten minutes there.

He's been in jail for the past 7 or 8 years and Bubba hasn't done that yet, so Madoff must be doing something right.

I actually read somewhere that he is a minor celebrity among the other prisoners, esp. the other thieves. To steal so much and for so long is considered noteworthy among them.

Anyone else been listening to the audible series about Madoff? It includes phone interviews with him in prison. In 2008 apparently they were still using a computer from the early 80s because Madoff was afraid of bringing in new tech and having it complicate his scheme.

Also all the stories about him getting fucked up in prison are purported to be bullshit.

He was at Butner Federal Medical Center for awhile, probably surrounded by guys with Down's syndrome; geriatric patients at death's door; scrawny, diminuitive, boyish-looking child pornography offenders taking part in sex offender evaluation and treatment; and wheelchair-bound former drug dealers who either became paraplegics from losing a gunfight with the feds, or got too fat on prison food and had to have lower limb amputations because of type II diabetes. Not the most intimidating crowd of thugs.

Hot chocolate is an important commodity in prison, because it's a key ingredient in mocha frappucinos and similar drinks.

Haven't bothered to do my research

He's behind bars where he belongs. As far as I'm concerned, having his family name vilified and both sons dead of stress is far worse than battery by Bubba.
