Line between aloofness and awkwardness
When talking to a girl who is interested (I believe) in me, if I leave after the interaction without saying bye (not intentionally but we were heading to different places so I felt it would be awkward to linger around), what makes her view that as being aloof or awkward?

Not verbally concluding your conversation is not "aloof", it's rude and awkward. If you've had a pleasant conversation with a girl, a simple, "Hey, see you around" is both aloof, and NOT awkward. Plus, it acknowledges the close to the conversation.

The answer to your post is total awkwardness. No doubt that it is what a woman thinks about a guy who does not even bother to say a simple "bye".

But the interesting question is the one you make in the thread title.

According to the dictionary, aloof can mean one of the following:

- not friendly or forthcoming; cool and distant.

or

- conspicuously uninvolved.

Then, acting unfriendly, uninvolved, cool or distant can be used or can work on your favor when there is already some connection established, you are dealing with some kind of shit test but she seems already hooked up. Charm is one thing aloof is other.

The act of approaching in itself is antonymous to aloofness, and when some girl gives a man IOI's and he acts aloof, she will think he is gay...

It is hard to fake aloofness, it works better when you really don't give a fuck about whether you bang her or not, because you have other options in your wallet or other targets around.

Be charming, polite, don't crack stupid jokes...but above all, be bold with your intentions and let them do the talk. You are the maestro, she is the orchestra. Just lead the conversation to where you want it to go and let her talk, and in the end go straight to the jugular.
