I am absolutely devastated by the news of Chris Cornell's passing. Cornell was by far my favorite vocalist and I'm lucky to have seen him perform in concert twice. In an age of studio modification, Cornell was one of the only performers who sounded just as amazing live as he would on an album.

I always thought I'd have unlimited chances to see him live. This is horrible.

Really, his guest vocals on Hunger Strike SINGLE-HANDEDELY got me into the Grunge genre. Soon after, I became a huge fan of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP...(Soundgarden actually came later, they'd been around a lot longer and their older 1980s stuff was tough to get into).

Grunge got me through some rough times. I even have an original vinyl copy of Mother Love Bone's Apple and had to hunt around on eBay for it, that's how much grunge means to me.

I was bummed when Scott Weiland died last year, this is part two. I'll be sulking all weekend.

amity - I totally forgot about that deep cut. Great vocal performance.

The very first bootleg concert footage I ever owned (on VHS, of course) was taken from a 1994 Soundgarden performance in San Antonio. My mom ordered it for me from the back of a Guitar World magazine. They played every song from Superunkown except for "Fresh Tendrils." Which is a shame, because that song is a banger. Every track on that album is worth listening to - it's a classic, and still holds up today.

This seems rather unexpected. Like many of the grunge titans, Cornell had his issues here and there with substance abuse. But he always looked like he was in good health and good spirits. He still sounded great. I wonder there was some autoerotic asphyxiation involved. RIP.

I always thought STP came (got famous) just after grunge like when Grohl started the Foo Fighters. But I may be wrong.

Core album came out in 1992...they were contemporaries, if perhaps a little later by a year or so. But certainly before Foo Fighters

I loved soundgarden and Audioslave's first album. Cornell could really belt it out. Great lyricist too. Damn shame...

He was actually the lead vocalists for TotD. Vedder was the "guest vocalist."

He hung himself. I agree that he was a kick ass artist and I truly loved his work. However, he didn't respect his own life. Suicide is a cowardly act.

I know that won't sit well with the admirers here, but that doesn't change the fact. I'm very sorry he chose to do this to himself, his friends, and his fans.

Crazy--he had just played a show hours before, showed no signs of any issues on social media or any of that. Obviously no way to know how he really felt unless you knew him/were part of his family, but shocking.

You're not getting any argument from me on that. We might live an era today where it's controversial to criticize someone's "decision to commit suicide", but that's just a symptom of how we've lost almost all of our principles. Remember when Robin Williams killed himself, and all of the Facebook coverage was borderline praising it?

Unless you're a POW who's being tortured into giving up information that's getting your comrades killed...I can't think of any justifiable reason to do it.

It is, and as a huge fan, I would agree it was, especially if he had kids. But.. its a part of a bigger epidemic. Why are middle aged men offing themselves in droves. We dont know about his home life, his relationship with his wife, whether or not he was about to be divorce raped. Many people blame what happened to Cobain on his wife.

They were not liked or respected at all at the time other than redneck girls with poof haircuts, or respected by anyone big at the time in the grunge/alternative community. You could say STP was the first Nickelback. People openly made fun of STP and wouldn't tour with them, because they were "corporate rock", and looked more like hair metal band than a grunge or alternative band in during the time. Pavement wrote a song about how much they hated STP, and its a great song. I still have this same view about them but the hate got less and less, I liked a few of their later songs. STP's guitar player was really good. Weiland was a good rock singer, but not grunge/alternative/punk in any way.

Agree--STP got lumped in with grunge bands due to their contemporary status, but they were definitely more of a "traditional" rock band than grunge. More Aerosmith/Led Zeppelin influence than indie/punk/alt. Dean Deleo is a hell of a guitar player.

STP re-invented their sound with each album which sets them apart from the average grunge band.

That being said, SG was always one of my favorite bands. It really saddens me to see my 90's idols dying off like this.

WHAT?!? STP was the first Nickleback! I don't remember that. I thought the problem with STP was Weiland was nuts. He was hard to work with. They were more like a hair band -- I remember Weiland in dresses--he was over the top. I don't remember the hate. Creed and Nickleback got a lot of hate but that was much later.
