I've never been a cop but I've dealt with people like this professionally.

The key is to realise that they crave an emotional rise out of you, and smiling while being utterly polite is actually the highest level of trolling you can possibly engage in.

This has been my default tactic for most of my adult life, being surprisingly cordial and/or playing dumb when belligerents are trying to start shit. It usually ends up with the counter-party short-circuiting, because they're caught off-guard.

For example, the last time was on a bus in the States. A sexy girl who've I've met once before got on, sat next to me, and we're chatting/flirting.

The chitchat is flirtatious, but nothing remotely provocative. It was like 7:30 in the morning--no one really seems to be paying attention to us.

Suddenly, a fat middle-aged black woman nearby starts yelling racist shit at me for some reason. I was a bit caught off-guard, like getting attacked by a wild animal unprovoked. The girl next to me freezes and goes silent and now the whole bus is staring at us.

I just treated the belligerent like a senile old woman at a nursing home (even though this woman is far younger than even my mother), and after a few exchanges her voice got quieter and quieter and she looked dejected. I didn't even say anything clever, witty, or insulting, I was just dismissive but very cordial (some might say affably evil).

"Kill them with kindness," was the saying when I was young. Someone like Heartiste might say, "amused mastery."

In most countries in the world you cannot insult an officer in uniform legally. At the very least you get a fine for disrespecting an officer of the law. As soon as he puts off the uniform you can blast away, but not in the service. But I guess US cops just have to take it, which frankly in my opinion makes things worse, because it just lowers the bar what some people think that they can get away with.
