Here's the current travel setup - It's a rundown of all gear and may be helpful to those looking to travel long term. It's always evolving / improving but has reached a solid level. Lots of people have been surprised the size of my travel bag - they are usually on a 3 day or one week jaunt with massive, heavy packs and marvel at how little I have. Funny thing is, I'm constantly trying to go even lighter..

Just a cool pic of my bag. Took so many pics in each country, but mostly just buildings and shit. Bangs in Bulg, Mac, Alb, Pol, Uke and Georgia (all were chinese/jap except for one bulgarian) go figure

Just realized I didn't list the countries - Currently in Georgia and will likely pop over to Slovakia before flying back to US in Jan. Kind of looking forward to working and planning then next trip

Your packing list looks like you're going to smell really bad. I can see that for a weekend of camping, but you're planning on smelling really bad for over a year? I don't see you attracting high quality women by taking this route, man.

I'm not going to hate, though, more power to you if you can live like this in your 40's, but I couldn't do that for a year and a half in my teens, much less now, and I'm a minimalist, I built and lived in a tiny house as an exercise in self-reflection. I mention your age because you mentioned you've been working on sites since the 90's, so I figure you're not in your teens anymore.

But yeah, this lifestyle sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, not my cup of tea!

Oh, and nice posts on the niche site thread, by the way, +1 from me, I may pick your brain on that stuff later.

Lol thanks bud, funny thing is that my hygiene has leveled up since leaving USA. I smell better than the entire populace of some of these countries! There's an art to it for sure, like certain clothes that don't stink, and showering, flossing, etc. (Baking Soda is key for pits/shoes). I've also had luxury condos/entire houses to myself for $150 to $300/month, so it's been a massive lifestyle upgrade across the board. I've been lucky to get a close look at Miserable Millionaires as well the Happy Homeless in my life and learned from both. The Tiny House thing is cool -

I understand the draw of onebagging, but found it a bit too unnecessarily limiting for me. Last year I did 3 countries in 6 months, and was planning to bring one bag but brought 1.5. It's all about choosing your clothes correctly. Versatile clothes for different situations and clothes that are easy to wash and won't stink.

So now that you're deep into your trip, any regrets on what you packed or didn't pack? I see no button down shirts on your list. So no nightclubs or nice restaurants?

I remember doing a month in Sicily with one bag. It was OK. I had a week of casual clothing, something for hiking, and something for a nice dinner out. Hit the laundry once a week and it was fine, but it would have gotten pretty old after much longer than that.

In winter somewhere like Germany/Poland, I probably wouldn't been able to get away with it with the added bulk. Doing something like that now, I'd probably get some kind of wardrobe box and DHL it around after myself so that I never have to be seen looking like a college kid.

Nice. I should add that I change things up every couple months. I'm not a 'dirt surfer' like a few I've met trying to get imaginary points for being constantly caked in dirt. I appreciate people trying to stretch their resources, but try to stay on my game. I recently dropped $150 on an Icebreaker collared shirt for biz, going out or hiking (merino/tencel). Having so few things has somehow justified buying the high end stuff, but it's usually worth it. I haven't had a boss since leaving corporate IT in 2003 and don't fuck with Suits/Ties. Nothing against suit game, just not my realm.

If youre gonna change cities every 2 days i can see the appeal of this but if youre going for a mid to long time, it makes absolutely no sense to pack like this.

All you have is hoodies and hiking boots and tshirts. You did 12 countries in 16 monthes? which means you stayed more than a month in each, no point whatsoever limiting your dress style like that. Depends on your lifestyle i guess but to me thats wasting a trip just to spare yourself getting a suitcase out of the cab once or twice?

I agree with this. I typically buy a rolling suitcase as large as I can get without paying an oversized baggage fee and weigh it based on what the airline allows. I put all of my heavy stuff in my carry on bag if I need to. I always go 2 KG or so over the weight limit and if they call you on it take a few things out (even if its only .5kg worth) and they let it slide. It's more of just going through the motions.

Yeah, I avoid such fast travels - it's the worst.
I typically go for 2 months minimum in a city. Italy was just where I landed. I was there maybe 4 days before rolling to Serbia and ended up doing 3 months in Bulg, Mac, then 2 months in Alb. Then, maybe a month in Croatia before plowing through Slovenia to get to Germany for a conference. Things get um, blurry for a while there, but made it up to Poland and chilled for a good 2 months in Gdansk, then 3 in Ukraine.

As for the clothes, I've found the technical hoodies to be the ultimate year-round thing, due to the UPF 50 for summer. I also have polos from Fly Low which is made from wicking materials. Pricey but looks dope enough for going out. The Ecco Oregon Retro Sneaker Boot is about as normal looking as it gets for multi use -

I see tons of travelers with those dumb zip-off pants and obvious hiking boots with giant brand new backpacks, overpacked. Many become a target for theft, but mostly they just look stupid in a city environment and out of place. I blend in far better with my setup and travel easier.

I only change cities like that if I'm trying to get somewhere.

But leads, whats the advantage in packing so light?

Why not have some shirts, jeans, pair of decent shoes, some smart blazer or jacket for going out, etc...?

I love onebagging... and if you wash your clothes often you can pull it off (did 3 months in Korea with a 50 litters backpack.


However onebagging doesn't mean dirty hippy... although most onebaggers are skinny beta hipsters.




I would seriously reconsider your whole packing list though... someone said you are 40 years old? all I see is hoodies and flip flops... those are loser clothes even for a 20 years old college kid.




Hiking clothes have their place... and exploring new outdoor landscapes is one of the greatest adventures you can do while travelling... but if you don't have any "real" clothes you are seriously limiting your possibilities.

You just don't go around a city while wearing flip flops or sneakers or nike clothes. Period. One bag is no excuse.

You may pull it off in the US when you are 15... but in the rest of the world you just look like a hobo.

I googled your oregon retro sneakers... you say "these look normal enough to do biz or hike thru mixed terrain or look cool in a city environment"... SERIOUSLY? I would wear them to the mountains, but any guys wearing those in a city, everyone will assume he didn't shower for a week.

a) delusional
b) hanging out with the wrong crowd in the places you visit. Specially in third world countries, quality girls take care of hygiene and smelling good much more than western girls.

This is the bag I use. I actually have two. I will take them both if I have to take lots of clothes/shoes(weddings, etc), but I wont check them, I wear one as a back pack and sling one over the shoulder.

And these clothes are germ/odor proof.

I hate checking bags and 99% of the time never do, for any length of trip. Even if I have to take multiple suits and dress shoes.

Yep, looked at that one as well as Minal, Tortuga, Osprey - every one 3 lbs and over though - EXOfficio makes good stuff too.
