Quote: The number of babies being born in the United States continues to fall, with the birth rate reaching a new record low in 2017, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last year, about 3.8 million babies were born in the U.S., which is 2 percent lower than the number born in 2016, and the lowest recorded number of births in 30 years, according to the report.

What's more, there were about 60 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44, which is 3 percent lower than the rate in 2016, and the lowest recorded rate since the government started tracking birth rates in 1909. [7 Baby Myths Debunked]

The decline in the U.S. birth rate from 2016 to 2017 was the largest single-year drop since 2010, the researchers wrote in the report, which was published today (May 17).

The teen birth rate fell 7 percent from 2016 to 2017, to a rate of 19 births per 1,000 teens ages 15 to 19. In addition, birth rates generally declined for women under 40, reaching record lows among women in their 20s, the report authors found.

Part of the reason for the decline in U.S. birth rates may be that people are in a general state of economic uncertainty, said Karen Benjamin Guzzo, associate director of the Center for Family & Demographic Research at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Even though the Great Recession technically ended in 2009, people may still feel uneasy about their economic situation; they may be employed but working part time, or going to school and working, or trying to pay off student loans, Guzzo said.

"People feel just really uncertain about the future," Guzzo told Live Science. "And that generally does not bode well for having kids."

In addition, young adults may feel like they haven't met all the milestones they feel they need to reach before having a kid, such as getting a college degree, having a stable income and getting married. "It takes longer to feel like you're a grown-up," Guzzo said.

One age group — women in their early 40s — did see an increase in their birth rate in 2017, the report found. This may be because this age group doesn't have a lot more time to wait to have kids. "They can't put it off for the future," Guzzo said.

Guzzo noted that the new report looked at overall births but didn't examine "birth order" — that is, whether the births were a woman's first, second or third child, and so on. So it's unclear from the current report whether women are having fewer kids overall (firstborns) or having smaller families; previous data suggested that the latter may be the case, Guzzo said. The CDC will examine birth-order data for 2017 in a follow-up report.

Are journalists stupid? Do they just like to act like everything that's obvious is a conundrum? Why so much uncertainty as in the above "it may be that ..." which comes up a couple times.

Women in their early 40s birth rate has gone up (I'm sure as you are that it's insignificant in the total number, while probably true), while everyone else's has gone down, another part of the civilizational death spiral that smacks one across the face.

Of course there are myriad factors why this is, but the funny thing is that they are all related, and it doesn't take a supreme intellect to understand it. I guess the question is, when will people start being honest about biology? That's the one thing I've noticed the Left wants to deny, deceive and lie about the most.

Unfortunately, I cannot say I'm surprised at the faux-befuddlement.

If something as obvious as gravitational pull contradicted a leftist narrative or two, the propagandist MSM would act all puzzled at the phenomenon that what goes up must come down. They'd stare at objects falling at 8.3m/s2 and wonder how could this be?

Indeed, this planet's gravity acting as an equal force on all people irrespective of their racial and gender "privileges" already seems to cut against several leftist narratives. Gravity must be a concept that reinforces white privilege!

The absolute state of leftism will eventually be to question all objective reality.

We have had 10 years of recession / very low economic growth. Financial stress and uncertainty puts a damper on wanting to have kids. This is the reason Gen X was the smallest post WWII generation: recessions, inflation, stagflation... people forgo having kids.

A lot of girls go through high school and college getting perfect grades on essays by studying the formulas and following them to a T. They possess little creativity, and much less any genuine interest or knowledge in the subject. They write not to describe real things or people, but to validate themselves among their peers.

Most "ideas" found in the minds of women were put there by men. The difference today is that the men providing the ideas are not fathers, brothers, husbands, or sons, but the effete corps of impudent snobs that started running the show after they graduation.

Uncucking Western society can only begin by by uncucking the intellectual culture.

The human race is definitely screwed in the long run. Who ever thought civilization advancement actually led to it's downfall. The native population in Europe and Japan is done within a couple more generations.

We can only depend on the Muslim tradition of 1 man - 4 wives to generate 12 children per family to continue the human race lol.

...*and* looking for Mr Right to settle down with?

A lot of people used to have kids out of boredom. That's not really the case anymore, especially you're constantly seeing images of your friends, family, complete strangers, and celebrities going on lavish vacations. A lot less feasible paying for plane tickets for 5.

Setting aside the political and scientific questions about climate change, we've got some crazies promoting a "BirthStrike" as a way to deal with the apparent inevitable apocalyptic environmental crisis. Women who might otherwise be good mothers are refusing to give birth due to the delusion that it is somehow evil to procreate, or that allowing their unfertilized wombs to shrivel up and fill with cobwebs and dust, they will somehow have a positive effect on climate issues on a planetary scale. Never mind the fact that people in Africa and India will generate billions of new offspring in the upcoming decade. A couple million leftist women not having children is going to have *such* an impact.

I think a "birth strike" on the part of leftist women is a wonderful idea. I think we should do anything and everything possible to discourage leftist women from ever having kids.
