Which would be my first thought, what skills do i have that can be used in other countries? Tradesmen never go hungry.

What language skills do i have? Teaching English the obvious one.

Does my education mean anything in another country?

$10K is alot of money, but when you go to places like Norway etc. That will not last long, but it is a question of how you want to live and what you are willing to do for work.

Throw down 2,000 and get a CELTA cerftificate, combined with university degree I could find a good teaching job. With the rest of the money I would use it to help keep me afloat while I try to start an online business. I would either move to SEA or Colombia, low COL and women.

If this is supposed to be a difficult decision instead of just turning into 'where to stay for a year' I think it would be more useful if we considered that most Western countries were no-go zones. Why would you be in exile otherwise? Perhaps you're a political refugee or owe taxes or something along those lines. Perhaps you want to escape the oncoming European civil war.

As for fleeing to Norway, go watch Lillyhammer on Netflix, it's about that exactly.

I'd first be looking to flee somewhere that the government doesn't stick it's fascist ugly face into every cranny and nook of my personal life. Second it must have available jobs if my online income fails. Third, it must have reasonable protection de facto against violence and courts of law.

I think the obvious choice would be Thailand even though they extradite people, but usually only really bad guys. Otherwise they let people be as long as you understand your place. Poland, Russia, Hungary perhaps.

Being exiled is an interesting topic, I honestly have felt like that in my previous stints abroad. I think the next time I leave it will be for good.

Anyone know any good books or films about the subject? Either the kind of 'having to start over' or 'plotting revenge'. I only know Count of Monte Christo.

Here is a tip..

Auto computers and locksmith are running the same tech.

If you can program auto locks to the modules they connect with the same tool can program the rest of the modules..

Home locks will have the same technology soon. They do now but will more in the future.

Before this happened I'd prepare... I'd prepare by storing gold offshore. Next I'd take that $10k, buy a 1 way flight to the country where my gold is stored and sell it. I'd then the remainder of that $10k, the cash I got for my gold, and invest it into some type of income source. Lastly I'd look back at the whole situation and be thankful I took the proper steps to prepare.

If faced on a choice of where to go, I would add language as an important consideration, Unless you have a well paid manual skill (others have mentioned auto repair, for ecxample) to really suceed you need to speak the language well. So my first choice would be an English speaking country, second choice an easy language to learn (Romance languages for example.) Germanic and Slavic languages re quite difficult to learn well. Most Asian languages are extremely difficult; for example Chinese: lots of characters to memorize,plus it's a tonal language -- what sounds to you and me like "ma" has half adozen meaningsdepending on subtle changes in pronunciation. Of course, if you've studied another language and are quite proficient, this would change things a bit.

I already have both EU and American passports ( took 7 years on and off work) so I'm sort of immune from exile in the normal sense. I also have a small independent income (took 25 years on and off making believe I was working), but for thought experiment's sake we should assume country of origin cuts that off.

To be honest $10k is chump change. There is no difference between getting exiled with $1k cash or $10k, in both scenairos you need to find a job. El mechanico is the exception, he is a mechanic, thats a very valuable skill in any part of the world heck he can even sustain his life in Iraq. Now lets get to the real deal, $10k is a very small sum, its not enough for a startup in any part of the world. But like some members stated here, I'd probably head to SEA and do a teaching gig while I got my life in order unless I had a very valuable skill in hand like el mechanico.

I don't know if going to a place that has lots of money AND a high cost of living is a good idea because getting a job depends on someone hiring you. The thing about bills is that you can't suspend them until you get a job. The bills keep coming in, with or without a job and the most expensive a place is, the quicker they will put you in the red.
The best idea would be to go somewhere that has LOTS of money but a cheaper standard of living.

Ideally, from an emotional standpoint, one can go to a place where they also like the climate of the people. Money isn't everything. There is money in Alaska and Toronto but as you notice, those two locales are quite lacking when it comes to datasheets..

The most interesting fact about this thread is that a mere few years ago, at least half of the responses would have had guys headed to the oil sands, but no one would even think of mentioning that now.

It's a good reminder that the world changes fast and is fundamentally unpredictable -- something that many dudes will pay the thinnest lip service to, and then proceed to make confident forecasts about what the world will look like in 10, 20, 50 and 100 years. One is left shaking one's head.

With that said, LOL, I would not be surprised if the demise of the oil and gas industry turns out to be a little exaggerated. It has been a victim of its own success in dramatically increasing production, combined with a slackening in demand and a concerted effort by the Saudis to keep prices low to avoid losing market share. But there is a great deal of innovation in the field waiting to be unleashed when demand picks up and the sheikhs get tired of taking losses to keep others out of business. As dead as it is in the short term, it is still an industry that guys would do well to keep their eyes on in the medium and longer term.

You're saying 10k is big money, then you give an example of spending it in one night. Spending 10k in a night is big money for nearly all people, but here we are talking about building a new future with 10k in a country you're not familiar with, not spending it in a day.

An airfare will set you back at least 1k to the other part of the world. 9k left.

You're going to have bunch of MISC expenses too.

By the way its not about the place you live, its about the general average. In most countries cars cost a lot, countries tax it very heavily. It might cost 1k in USA or Mexico, but in Thailand, Malaysia its gonna cost a lot more. Even in Denmark, Sweden cars cost a lot.

Not sure if I'm understanding your post correctly, but cars sure don't cost 1k in the US. I doubt you can find a beater for that, at least not one that'll fall apart when you turn the ignition.

Most low-end to medium cars cost 10k at LEAST. More like 15-20k, and I'm nowhere near the high end stuff.
