The American Medical Association has officially recognized obesity as a disease, a move that could induce physicians to pay more attention to the condition and spur more insurers to pay for treatments.

How can it be a disease? Mental? There are some physical causes but mostly isn't it just discipline, right? It can go one of few ways I guess. Doctors take it more seriously and treat earlier and more aggressively or people just say it's ok that I am fat I have a disease.

How the hell is BMI limited in diagnosing BMI? A BMI of 25 is overweight, a BMI of 30 is obese, a BMI of 40 is morbidly obese, and that's it. Only exceptions to it are heavy-weight athletes, and those people aren't going to be diagnosed or visiting the doctor anyway.

The AMA is a racket, look into thier dodgy history. This is all about money since now that obesity which effects 40% of Americans is now a "disease" a shit ton of research (that needs to be publi$hed in thier journals), and of course drugs (which fund research, journals, AMA, and doctors) will need be dispursed to deal with this now pandemic of fatties.

AMA is purely drivin by money, that explains this move.

Dude they made alcoholism a disease, this doesnt surprise me at all. Its indicative of a culture that refuses to take responsibility for itself.

Both alcoholism and obesity can be completely cured if the person simply makes a lifestyle change. A real disease is outside of a person´s control and ability to get rid of on their own.

According to the official charts, many weightlifters could be classified as obese. Reading between the lines of the article, this is a new scheme to market drugs and have the insurance pay for it. U.S. medical care is an expensive nightmare and just getting worse.

people are fat by choice. I lost 10kg in 5 months by reducing to almost zero bread, rice and pasta intake leaning into something more paleo. coupling that with some medium light workouts (which i already did before) did wonders on the scale.
