Erin Standen says the man she met in April 2010 vanished three days after finally joining her in Canada — an all-too-familiar story for Border Services.

After Erin Standen married the man of her dreams a year ago, she showered him and his family in Cuba with love — and gifts.
In June, while waiting for the spousal sponsorship to come through in Havana, the 28-year-old Brampton single mother began renovating her basement apartment for their new life.
She ripped out the carpet, installed tile floors, bought a 47-inch big-screen TV and put in a $4,000 bedroom set, anticipating his arrival.
On Jan. 12, the long wait was finally over and Jorge Manuel Batista Gonzalez, 33, arrived at Pearson International Airport, embraced by an exhilarated Standen.
Three days later, Standen says, Gonzalez — after kissing her goodbye as she left for her waitressing job — walked out the door with all the clothes and other things she had bought for him, along with $1,000 tip money she had collected in the bedroom.

All that remained of him, she says, was a misspelled note on a crumpled napkin: “Sorry I don’t fell love anymore. Don’t lock for me. I’l be good. I will try to pay you back. Thank x Everithing. Jorge Manuel.”
Standen says she was left with thousands of dollars in debt — from a $4,000 cellphone bill to money she borrowed from her parents for her wedding in Cuba — and a broken heart.
“We talked about how many children we’re going to have, about travelling around the world together, how he was going to treat me with a big dinner with his first paycheque, and how he owed his life to me,” Standen says, in tears.
“I came home. He took everything I bought him: shoes, winter jackets, three pairs of jeans, four sweaters and … underwear. I feel so empty. He just ripped my heart out of me. I feel so used and violated.”
The Star was unable to reach Gonzalez for comment. Someone who answered the phone at his family’s home in Cuba hung up. Standen says she has also phoned and emailed his family, but no one seems to know where he is.
Standen says she called the police but was told there was nothing they could do because the two were married. She called the Canada Border Services Agency to report the alleged fraud, but says she was told: “Your case is one in 10,000. You’ll never know what happens to him.”
CBSA would not comment to the Star on the case. It has no readily available statistics on the number of permanent residencies revoked for alleged marriage fraud.
Worse, Standen says, immigration officials told her she is on the hook to provide financial support to Gonzalez for three years. Tiana Gabriel, a spokesperson for Citizenship and Immigration Canada, verified that if a sponsored spouse receives social assistance, the sponsor would be responsible to pay it back.
CIC implemented a new law last year requiring all sponsored spouses to stay in the marriage for two years before they can receive permanent resident status. But the condition only applies to those who submitted sponsorship applications after Oct. 25, 2012, and Standen’s case predates that.
Gabriel said the process for reporting marriage fraud hasn’t changed and said the government plans to launch a new campaign soon, warning people once again “to be wary of falling victim to marriages of convenience.”
The sponsored person’s permanent resident status can be revoked, but the process is lengthy.
Standen says the border agency would not tell her if a warrant would be issued, and officials didn’t even ask for a photo of Gonzalez.
Standen says she met Gonzalez on vacation at the Club Amigo resort in Guardalavaca in April 2010, where he worked as an entertainer. The two fell in love and she travelled back and forth 10 times to be with him. She married him in January 2012 and filed for sponsorship.
“I loaded his phone with money so he could text me. I called him every day, twice a day. I sent him and his family $60 to $80 every two weeks. I got them cooking utensils, jeans and spices,” Standen says, teary.
“I stayed with him at his parents’ house. They said they loved me and he always put me on the phone with them. Before I leave, there are always tears in everyone’s eyes.”
Standen said friends had warned her about Cuban men marrying foreign women as a way out.
“I was so blinded to it. It feels so real, the love I felt from him. I was so close with him and his family. I put everything I had out there. I wouldn’t have known he’d do this to me,” she said.
“I just want to ask him why he did this to me, if he didn’t love me and didn’t want to be with me. I just need some closure. He was my everything.”



Amateur's take a lesson for a true G. You can't coach that, he probably doesn't even have the internet back in Cuba. And she might not be all that, but neither is he. He got a woman from a 1st world country who probably makes more in a month than he does in a year to marry him, buy him a bunch of shit, send him and his family money monthly for like 2 years and get him citizenship in a new country where he can barely write the language and if he refuses to work or go on welfare she has to repay the government the welfare money.

And of course the Canadian government response was to make people wait before they can gain PR status. But it almost is entirely due to female pressure. If I recall correctly the precise case that caused this reform was an African man who married a white woman but was still married in Africa got his PR status and dumped her afterwards (basically same thing as this). The government doesn't care when women do it to men. But when men do it to women they go cry to every media station and get a big pity party.

If a Cuban woman ran this hustle on a man, he would be shamed in the media and told he got what he deserved for trying to take advantage of a woman from a poor country. He would be portrayed as pathetic and creepy, and would be mocked by women and held up for derision. The woman would be applauded or at the very least excused for her actions, because clearly the man had no interest in her as a person, and was only trying to exploit her poverty for his own sexual gratification.

Remember, women are always the victim. If they do something wrong, it's justified retaliation for something a man did. If a man does something wrong, it's because he's just bad.

One of my girlfriends was half Cuban. Her mom, full blooded Cuban who was born there, swore she would never marry a Cuban man because they're players. She broke her promise and married one, and he ended up cheating on her with the girl who was her Maid of Honor in the wedding.

If he didnt like her that much, he could just stay with her for the first months or even years after his arrival, get help from her in terms of finding a job, learn how the canadian system works, understand the culture and few years down the line he could come up with some bullshit as why their relationship won't work.

This way it would be a win-win situation for both of them. She wouldnt feel so stupid for marrying him and inviting him to Canada and he would have a friend that could help him out in case he needs her help again.

Plus she wasnt bad looking. All you black cats that love big booties, you know you would hit that shit, i bet she has a nice phat booty.

Half my relatives came to Canada doing this shit lulz. It is what child support rape is to Men and my eyes - a grad equalizer. These women are completely dumb as my Uncle told me: "I was very honest with her, I told her my main plan was to come to Canada and achieve a better life for ME AND MY FAMILY. I have a son whom is my family and I love very much, whom is she? I owe her nothing but after a while these white women can turn stupid. This is a classic case. Her friends will warn her, parents seem skiddish, all the flags there but she still goes through with it. It does not even click to see that in whatever culture if a Man truly was in pursuit of her hand in live and marriage would be agessive and give her and her family things even if he had nothing at all.

These women don't get it and even absent sex will create the most bulkshit logic to how finally they have been chossen from some tropical Man abroad. All these women are fat, and or over 35. All are desperate for love but the Internatinal market for women seeking husbands is even more cut throat then back at home. Multiply this case by all the men who got scammed by foreign brides. Makes all her crying seem minute compared to the crap men go through. I don't know of any cases where Cubans were sponsored to come to Canada and the marriage lasted more than a year. I personally know 2cases where Mexican women were sponsored and these marriages are still in tact. Yet Cubans, I would advise anybody who is considering marrying a cuban to not bring them off the island. Like mixx said about colombianas in the states, their attitudes change for the worst. Same for Cubans. I have met a few cool Cubanas in toronto. But every time I meet one, I think who was the sucker. You marry a Cubana, you better stay there or not sponsor her. Too many fraudulent marriages. Sad to say this, but keeping her there ironically can actually make your marriage last longer than one if you brought her into Canada. Now it's not no Cubans. Any third world country,,,i am aways skeptical of their true intentions.

This guy in this video worked for a budget hotel compared to the others. He made more in a month from tips and other hustles than doctors do in Cuba. So he is always thinking of a hustle. Not only him, many think the same.

Bottom line: don't sponsor anybody

I want to address some of the posters - as well as a fair amount of lurkers - here who have expressed or felt that this was cruel to the woman (fat though she may be) involved. Make no mistake, I agree. She got used and nexted in the purest sense of the words. In a perfect world, I don't think I'd like to see this happen to anyone, male or female.

But that's the rub: this happens to men all the time. In fact, the only reason this is at all noteworthy is because the roles are reversed. And I'm not just talking about foriegn brides gone bad (of which, as has been shown on RVF, the statistics are oftentimes negatively exaggerated), but of the whole concept of a relationship in the West. A man who did all this for a woman and then got brutally dumped would be shamed and told "she just wasn't happy." There is no safety net for him to turn to, nobody for him to lean on. Western society gives women the ultimate hand in ending relationships and using men, be it a no-fault divorce or rigged alimony/child support laws.

That (I believe) is what the majority of these comments are reflecting. Not so much a celebration of misfortune for this specimen, but the fact that it finally happened in reverse.

Just remember this happens thousands of times a day to men and it's not only accepted but oftentimes celebrated (e.g. Beyonce's "All the Single Ladies" and such). That will go a great ways to making you feel less bad.
