Early puberty in girls caused by antibiotics in food
Early puberty in girls caused by antibiotics in food but tofu could prevent it

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/early-puberty-g...it-1477916

Girls are starting to begin puberty at the age of seven, with antibiotics given to animals potentially to blame, but soya products such as tofu could possibly lead to the process starting later, according to two US researchers.

Dr Louise Greenspan is a paediatric endocrinologist who works at healthcare organisation Kaiser Permanente and is on the faculty at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and Julianna Deardorff, an associate professor of maternal and child health at University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley).

The researchers have published The New Puberty, a book that aims to give parents, educators, policymakers and health providers the answers to why girls are going through puberty much earlier than previous generations, with the age of eight the usual starting point.

Estrogen is a hormone responsible for the development of the female body and secondary sexual characteristics. However, there are some chemicals that mimic hormones and can potentially stimulate puberty early.

"The concern about antibiotics is that one of the reasons antibiotics are used in the food supply is not just to treat animals' infections, it's actually because when animals are given antibiotics they get fatter and they go through pubertal development earlier," Greenspan told NPR.

"So it speeds up the process of raising a young animal to an animal that's ready for slaughter.

"The concern is that if antibiotics are doing this to animals... and they're not broken down in the intestinal system, in fact they're absorbed orally in the stomach when we eat them, could they be having a similar effect in kids?"

In addition to antibiotics, Bisphenol A (PBA), a chemical that mimics estrogen and is commonly found in many plastics, paper, receipts and other commonly used compounds, could also have an impact.

The New Puberty

Greenspan and Deardorff have been researching pubertal development and adolescent health for several years.

They have been following 444 girls from the San Francisco Bay area since 2005, starting from when the girls were aged between six to eight years old.

Last year, their work on how environmental exposure together with biological and socioeconomic factors influence girls' transitions through puberty and potential breast cancer risk won them the 2013 Community Breast Cancer Research Award.

“At age seven, 25% of black girls have breast development, compared to 15% of Hispanic girls and only 10% of white girls and 2% of Asian girls”
- Dr Louise Greenspan and Julianna Deardorff
In their book, the researchers define "starting puberty" as being when pubic hair and breast development first begins.

"The evidence suggests that in the past, age eight was the cut-off for normal puberty, so we thought that less than 5% of girls were going through puberty before the age of eight," said Greenspan.

"[Today], at age seven, 25% of black girls have breast development, compared to 15% of Hispanic girls and only 10% of white girls and 2% of Asian girls.

"The same pattern can be seen for pubic hair development... that was significantly higher than what had been found in the past."

Soya products protect against early puberty

The duo have also debunked the commonly held belief in the media over the last few years that consuming soya products can increase a person's risk of developing breast cancer.

"We found preliminary data that suggests that soy is actually protective and that higher soy intake may lead to later puberty, even when controlling for the differences in the families where there was a lot of soy intake because obviously there are differences in families that are giving their kids a lot of tofu," Greenspan said.

"The data is now coming out that women shouldn't worry so much about their soy intake for breast cancer, but it does speak to another concept in environmental health, which is the window of susceptibility.

"That means the timing of when you are exposed to something does affect the outcome.

"We think that children should eat soy because that's when it trains their body to become resistant to estrogen."

Does that mean they hit the wall sooner? If so, we should put a stop to this practice. Sort of serious.

I think so. Sounds logical. I remember one girl from high school talking about getting her period at 7. At 7 you're in 2nd grade.

It's not only antibiotics - estrogen mimickers like Bisphenols - BPA, BPS etc. - do the same thing. Also if antibiotics, bisophenols and other toxins disrupt female body functions, then they influence men too by the way - more man-boobs, more easily going fat, less testosterone etc.

Some growth hormones in meat balance that out, but not in a good way.

Merarche age first started to decline in the 1840s as sugar became more affordable and the number of calories per day eaten by the average person in the first world increased steadily. A lot of the whole Victorian obsession with sexual taboos resulted from their experience with menarche happening earlier and earlier with each generation.

I'm not sure what these researchers are reporting is anything away from this long term historical track that has already been known, and if they're just trying to throw in trendy hormone fear to avoid the real problem: Childhood obesity.

The girls who are the first in their class to break 100 lbs (45kg) in body weight are also generally the first to develop breasts and then start their periods. There's some HGH issues that mess with this (women genetically predisposed to be short are more likely to start their period early), but in general larding it up at a young age means starting your period before you can do long multiplication. This is an r-selection optimization made in the face of a super-abundance of calories.

There's some question how much of childhood obesity is from increased caloric intake, vs how much is from reduced physical activity. Farm children generally eat higher calorie diets --but those kids also engage in a lot more physical activity than a suburban kid without chores, and so stay lean.

In general, over-abundance of calories, low physical activity, and the obesity that follows seems to trigger r-selection traits.

And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly color. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

RE: Early puberty in girls caused by antibiotics in food
I have always been profoundly suspicious of this claim that girls, and also boys for that matter, are entering puberty earlier than they used to in the past. For a start, consider the graph that tracks the age of a girls first menstruation. Do they really have reliable and comprehensive data from 1840? I seriously doubt it. A lot of data used to create that graph is likely sucked out of thin air.

The reason this claim has always made me suspicious is that it is just a little too convenient. It's difficult to explain exactly why I say this, but I'll try:

These claims (of earlier maturation) are fairly recent. To my mind they are a convenient "out" for people, typically from the contemporary "fake left", but could apply to others as well. Basically parents, and other parental type figures, will have some degree of unease when their children reach puberty, start taking an interest in the opposite sex and go through all that stuff. This is a fairly natural reaction, but the problem is that many modern parents feel bad about having these feelings because they are suffering from some version of the "naturalistic fallacy". If sex is natural why do I have this uneasy feeling? Add to this the fact that this person will also usually feel compelled to believe the nonsense that there is no difference between a boy and girl in this situation and you have a massive case of cognitive dissonance. Claiming that children, especially girls, enter puberty much earlier now, than in previous ages is the "out" they need to resolve their internal conflict. They can push off their feelings and claim they are the fault of evil corporations polluting the water supply. "I have this feeling because my daughter is maturing earlier because of Acme corporation doing A,B and C". I mean it is pretty much perfect. And that is what concerns me. It is too perfect to actually be true. The reality is that the feelings of disquiet they feel compelled to pass off onto malignant forces are ordinary and would occur at whatever age their children reach puberty, and this is quite normal. In case I need to spell out the obvious, the feelings of disquiet are natural because a girl getting pregnant by an unsuitable boy is socially detrimental to her, and in the absence of medicine possibly physically detrimental as well.

In my opinion children today today likely do not reach puberty earlier than in previous ages, or at least if they do the average difference would be measured in months rather than years.

RE: Early puberty in girls caused by antibiotics in food
Nice post, Blackhawk.

My first girlfriend was 4'11" by 5th grade, and stayed that height into adulthood. She had her first period then, as a 10-11 year old. It's only a slight exaggeration that what happened at my school is what happened in that one South Park episode, 'Bebe's boobs destroy society.' Once those mosquito bites came in, all us boys were reduced to vicious little chimps vying for her attention.

Looking back, she was sexualized from such an early age. Not necessarily by old lecherous dudes, but by horny ass boys. Schools are so insulated... kids see each other, and only each other, every single day. Those were seriously some ape-like, tribal days... no one that age can process what the fuck is happening, but the hormones rage nonetheless.

Contrast her with my end-of-high-school girlfriend, who was a late bloomer. She didn't get her first period until she was 17. It's absolutely insane how late-bloomer stayed off most everyone's radar when we were growing up, even though she ended up being a knockout.

Everything Blackhawk wrote about applies... 4'11" was little, sedentary, and hypoglycemic due to poor eating habits. Meanwhile, late-bloomer was taller, skinnier, ate healthy, and had a very active childhood, running around and racing (and beating) boys. Everything came early for early-period, and everything came at the right time for late-bloomer. No surprise one ended up much better adjusted than the other.

Goddamn, I hope I don't have to buy my fictional daughter maxi pads when she's 10 years old.

Didn't they observe this change in the mouse world experiment?
Access to easy resources, easy life, didn't the later generations of the mice hit puberty earlier and earlier?

The age of consent used to be lower before the feminists of the 19th century raised it in order to increase their own SMV.

Quote:was a movement to elevate morality and improve the sexual treatment of women, largely through the abolition of prostitution and the double standard.
From the last three decades of the nineteenth century to the end of World War I, an international crusade to purify sexual conduct focused on the need to reeducate society, particularly men, in the control of sexuality. Rooted in earlier women's temperance and moral reform traditions, the American Social Purity movement was influenced by the "rescue" work of British prostitution reformers like Josephine Butler and W.T. Stead and the revelations of international groups for the suppression of "white slavery."
Composed of widely diverse groups divided on the issues of free love and women's political and economic rights, the American movement, like its British counterpart, was united in the need for a single moral standard, and the word "chastity" figured frequently in the literature. Because Social Purists believed in woman's need to resist sexual subjection by men, the movement had feminist participation. Suffragists were featured speakers at the first American Purity Congress in Baltimore in 1895, and Purists and feminists alike favored abolition, rather than regulation, of prostitution and moral equality in the relations between the sexes.
Prostitution was clearly the focus of much Social Purity agitation. Americans were particularly effective in combating systems of regulated tolerance. Women's voluntary religious and charitable organizations lobbied successfully to abolish legalized prostitution in St. Louis in the 1870s, and there were no further regulationist attempts in the United States thereafter. From the 1880s onward, Social Purists fought for a variety of abolitionist reforms, including prosecution of customers as well as prostitutes, improved prison conditions and rehabilitation for prostitutes, and centers and activities to safeguard the virtue of urban working girls. Movement advocates were also instrumental in establishing municipal vice commissions, raising the age of consent laws, and passing the 1910 Mann Act.
Since its inception Social Purity was criticized, not without reason, as morally repressive. Women like Deborah Leeds, whose husband, Josiah, was an ally of the nation's chief censor, Anthony Comstock, herself personified the movement's censorship wing with her Department of Pure Literature. However, recent research has demonstrated that the movement was also dedicated to the dissemination of sex hygiene information, suggested by its motto "Purity through knowledge, not innocence through ignorance."
As Linda Gordon has pointed out, the birth control ideas of Social Purists were feminist in that advocates urged voluntary motherhood and woman's control over her own body. Yet Social Purists were opposed to contraception and abortion. Furthermore, their eugenic arguments, which at first were aimed to increase woman's power, foundered in a "cult of motherhood" essentially opposed to woman's professional advancement.
At the core of the Social Purity movement was the conviction that sexuality had to be controlled. Many reformers believed that because incontinence was basically associated with man, it was woman's mission to reeducate him. To the extent that it accepted the idea of feminine moral superiority and, by implication, the traditional "separate sphere" for women, the movement was not fully feminist. Nonetheless, in urging women to resist sexual domination and exploitation, it aided the advancement of feminine autonomy.

Phytoestrogens are weaker and fill the same receptors as the estrogen which our liver aromatizes from testosterone. So consuming them can actually cause our estrogen levels to be lower. I eat sweet potatoes and (non GMO) soy and have never had any problems with estrogen levels being too high. The fatter you are around your midsection the more susceptible you are towards your body producing more estrogen.
But yes, I get your point, it is absurd sounding and counter intuitive.

Allow me to offer an alternative theory: girls are hitting puberty earlier because they're getting fatter and fatter. Look at the author of this article, for instance. She's an obese fuck who's using this as another excuse.
