From real ganja smokers, I know, Jamaican weed isn't really that good in comparison to what you can get out of Europe and all the micro-greenery places nowadays. Well 10K would go a long way in Jamaica in terms of modernizing cultivation. Might not be able to afford all the LED's and micro-electric controlled hydroponic feeds, but right now ganja grows behind someone's house kinda haphazardly.

But without getting to exotic, importing Old Navy is a sure fire winner in Jamaica. It's really weird to me how much they prefer Old Navy to the other brands, but my family used to move a fair amount of it. I could introduce Central Texas style BBQ to the Island or Thai food. (probably need to bring in a thai cook/chef though). I remember reading recently about this Jamaican dude trying Sushi for the first time in downtown Kingston. It was an EVENT to him.

Outside of the Islands,

- American and Canadian tourists go any and everywhere. Becoming a fixer or tour guide for adventurous souls is really just a facebook/twitter page, and search engine optimized website. You can't compete with hostels, hotels, and established tour places - but you can certainly niche down.

My professional skills, I can barely use them out of the places I'm licensed. Somebody hits me up, "Where do you live again? Not my jurisdiction, please contact someone who is licensed there"

If I was in the developed world, probably the familiarity with the bureaucracy. As fucked as America is, you typically have recourse. Even when they shoot you dead, your family has recourse. As fucked up as America is, there's still a sliver of fundamental fairness.

In places like Germany and France, they seem to take red tape to the next level.

Outside of the developed world
- Red tape means fuck you, pay me.
- General security/safety would be of greater concern. I'd really like to do Beirut but shit might pop off real soon.
- Reliability of "basic" services. Net, Water, Electricity.
- The variety of food. Maybe most food available in America is crap, but I can get Laotian Crap, Georgian Crap, Cajun and Creole crap, Hamburger crap, Crappy Italian.

Outside of Tokyo, it was not easy to eat non-native. A lot of spots are into clustering. So you can X type of Food in Y area, but if you're in Z area, they only have Z. My local food court has Indian, Korean, Actual Chinese (Noodle Soups and Bao), Americanized Chinese, Greek, Tex Mex, Americanized Pizza, Cajun, a grilled chicken restaurant, Cuban, and a 5 guys. That's not popping off in Singapore or Brussels or Nairobi.

By the way its not about the place you live, its about the general average. In most countries cars cost a lot, countries tax it very heavily. It might cost 1k in USA or Mexico, but in Thailand, Malaysia its gonna cost a lot more. Even in Denmark, Sweden cars cost a lot.

I reality people would just give me a car because I have friends and relatives that are aware of my potential. They'd rather cash a favor in later.

I'd probably fix the junk given to me and give it back after I buy my own and consider the repairs a wash..

For the sake of the thread..

People all operate different the 10k guy at the bar or the cheapskate that tries to live in some small village to save money because they are scared of high rent etc.

There's also people that can fix stuff. Everyone wants them.

If you read this thread and know for a fact if you move someplace you have absolutely no way to make money or anything to offer you need to take a good hard look in the mirror. Also if you wonder why alpha guys fuck girls you may be the same dude.

Most young single person (we will use under 40 as an example) can hardly come up with $10,000 unless they sell their house and / or car.

It's very easy to make 10k but it's much harder to save 10k.

10k is very small in terms of leaving and starting a new lifestyle somewhere. But it's always relative to what your expected monthly burn rate is. Someone who lives on $500 a month might think well they could live 1.5 years on it assuming they didn't find work. They also would be able to much easier find work that would meet their expected cost of living.

Someone who spends 10k per month would be screwed leaving on 10k.

I wouldn't be comfortable leaving on 10k. My number would be about 10x that to be comfortable. I figure I could live fine on $3k/ month and that would give me about 3 years to get my stuff together. If I was forced to though I'd go to a very low cost of living area i.e. Cambodia and spend day till night working on an online business. I'd also probably get a TEFL work a year or two then go look for work in the Middle East teaching in order to save more money.

10k is certainly enough to do a startup in many parts of the world the problem would be the continued funding after you get it off the ground.

For me, I would want to go somewhere with a warm climate. I don't like cold. And the country should have some sort of developed economy.

When you take everything into account 3-4k per month is a good ballpark figure to live comfortably in most developing countries. Now its not going to be easy to set up a business that will generate 3-4k usd cash flow /pm with 10k. Buying a stake in a bar with 10k? In Pattaya maybe you can buy a stake in a small bar that consistently bleeds money. Bars have very high turnover rates, thats why they exchange hands at such low P/E multiples. Personally I would avoid the bar business at all costs, it might seem like an attractive lifestyle, but its not easy to run it profitably.


A bar that is hip one year, might not be hip the next and lose customers. My cousin runs a decent bar, he just spent 60k on renovation alone. Where I'm from opening a shitty convinience store at a shit part of town will set you back more than 20k, I don't think its that much different in other countries. For 10k the only thing that comes to my mind is opening up a hot dog / lemonade stand.

I've been thinking about it, and I can't decide on 3. I really do think that it's a lot easier to start over from scratch than people think. You just have to be prepared to let go of your conceptions of what you need in life.

For me, what would be selling points about a location would be:

Warm climate

Some sort of economy, rather than just total mud-hut scenarios.

Being near a major body of water, like the ocean or a river. It's good to be near water.

Fuck, I flew to Japan with less than 8k and was able to live easily for 3 months before I found a job. Anyone who thinks it's nothing more than a bit of savings has no idea how to live a spartan life, or even the real value of money. my 2cents.

I'd go the USA and get the same type of work I'm doing now in Canada, and slam buxom southern belles on the side. It's a day or two drive, it'll cost me $500 in gas money. I'd use the remaining $9,500 on a downpayment on a house there in some cheap part of town, or some ghetto neighborhood.

If that's not an option there's lots of work in Qatar, Saudi, Oman, or another rich Arab nation, and then live in Eastern Europe in my off time.

The question is way too vague…there are too many factors that would influence anyone’s decision.

Such as:

1. What age are you ?
2. What skills do you have that can get you a job ?
3. Do you have anyone that needs to come with you ?
4. What languages do you speak ?
5. How much do you know about the place you are going ?
6. What passports do you have ?
7. What kind of cultural/religious/racial background are you from ?
8. What kind of women do you like ?

I could go on and on….but you get the idea.

Also, if you are exiled you usually don’t get a passport from the country you are leaving, so you are either stateless or have a 2nd passport. Some countries sell citizenship....but you're gonna need a lot more than 10k.

If you are stateless, you are pretty much fucked…even with 10k in cash.

Sure, allow me to elaborate a bit.

For the purposes of this thought experiment let's forget that you wouldn't have a Western passport in the case you were exiled.

While I'd surely like to hear some ideas as they apply to my current situation, I want the input here to be relevant to a general audience. For instance, I'm low 20's and speak more than one language, but I'd like to hear advice that someone in their mid to late 20's could apply that only speaks English.

If it helps some, let's also change "exiled" to "voluntarily leaving the country only to return if and only if absolutely necessary."

I'm not necessarily entertaining these thoughts right now, but I'd like to expand my bank of ideas.

The scenario sounds like it's part of a desperate situation. What do desperate people (illegal immigrantsfrom Africa in Europe, for example) do -- when they have no welfare payments?
We're talking survival here and the need for food and shelter (after air and water, these are at the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.)
Approach every business offering to wash dishes, clean offices,clean bathrooms, work in a warehouse, move furniture, do gardening, carry bricks at a construction site. Minimal language skills required to do dirty heavy dangerous outdoor work. Try to get a place to sleep as part of the deal such as sleeping on the floor of the janitor's closet. Spend $10 of your 10K on a foam mattress, another $10 on a blanket.
If you're a busboy in a restaurant, or dishwasher, as part of the deal you can eat uneaten food: a slice of pizza that has not been bitten into for example.
In the above scenario, $10K is a huge amount of money.
If you can do better than that (enough language skills, a work permit, and being presentable) you can avoid heavy dirty dangerous and outdoor work and do entry level office or retail work, working your way up. In that case you can rent a room, buy food at the supermarket (bread, canned beans, some fruit are cheap and require no cooking) and dip into your savings only to make ends meet since your income won't be enough.
Illiterate man from Central America survive in the US this way.
Not a pleasant life but better than sleeping in the gutter.
Eventually you save your money, build up your skills and move up.

With 10k USD you can pretty much go anywhere in the world and start over, granted you'll need to start making money ASAP.

In this question, do we also have to purchase transportation to get to said country?

For me personally, I'm in a point of my life where I'm interested in starting my own online business, so I think I would likely go to somewhere that is cheap like SEA so I can last a long time in order to get cash flow (where are skills I'd have to acquire for my business ideas also, so the longer I can sit on savings the better). I probably would not go to Thailand as the temptation of spending my money would be rather high, so I think Cambodia might be a place to go(not sure how spotty the internet is over there though). There are parts of Eastern Germany that are more expensive than SEA, but offer really good benefits also, so I might consider that to be an option.

If I were exploiting the theoretical questions rules in which I have the option to go where ever and wanted to just make a lot of money quick working a 9-5 type of job, I'd go to Kuwait. Kuwait has the world's strongest currency by a lot, right now 1 KWD = 3.33 USD, so you can already be balling just after one year of decent work.

Kuwait seems like it is pretty boring though, so I'd probably just opt in for like the Netherlands or something if I were getting a 9-5 gig.

I'd move to SEA, get a part-time english teaching job and hustling up another job doing something else. Eventually, I'd parlay that into online work of some sort with my current skill set.

I did it with a fraction of 10,000 USD. I'm almost embarrassed to say how little money I left USA with.

I think guys underestimate just how little you can survive on when you're in crisis mode. I would never suggest moving with a tiny bit of money but you can do it if you can survive on eggs, potatoes and rice. Ha.

At various points in my past I've arrived and ended up sustaining myself in:

-Thailand with $700

-Argentina with $6,000 (only needed ~2k of that)

-Colombia with $1,800


10k is plenty to restart virtually anywhere in the world. With 10k I could move to Tokyo, twice, and make it. So can anyone else if they have the desire and ambition.
