I love dogs, they are loyal and awesome and everything humans aren't a lot of the time.

I could not own a dog myself right now because I'm a freelancer and my life is unpredictable.

The American trend in keeping dogs as house pets accelerated after the WWII, reinforced by the experiences that US soldiers had with dogs in Europe. I see many people with large breeds who live in apartments or houses in cities that struggle with this decision. Often the owners and the pets are unhappy with their circumstances. I pity these dogs.

Before the house pet craze of the 1950's, people did what I do, keep a proper kennel. My dogs live in a spacious enclosed kennel and run attached to the barn with an interior heated room for the winter. Most of the time they have the run of the farm but will return to their kennel on command. The beagle is civilized enough to be allowed in the house. The rottweilers are outdoor dogs except in emergencies. All the dogs are well trained. The closest neighbors are far.

Dog ownership must fit the lifestyle of the owner. I can't imagine owning dogs in a city, nor would I ever own anything smaller then a beagle. I take short trips occasionally, extended family feeds the dogs for me as I do for them when they travel.

As a farm owner, a well kept kennel provides many benefits. My vegetable garden is unmolested by vermin, strange dogs avoid the property, all the chickens are accounted for every morning and its impossible to get within 300 yards of the house undetected.

The key with dogs is to set boundaries and be damn sure you're the boss and you'll have a great dog. If you don't you'll have an obnoxious bastard who won't shut up and might bite.

My mother walks this gay little Shih Tzu.

I think walking everyday and experiencing nature has been nothing but a boon to her physical and mental health. She looks young for her age, has an appropriate weight, and wouldn't dream of taking anti-depressants.

Dogs are also great for kids to learn about responsibility and, eventually, death.

I had a situation recently where taking care of a black lab was thrust upon me for about two months, and I fucking hated it. It was in a medium-size apartment, and I was the one always taking her outside and for walks. No freedom, can't leave the apartment for more than X hours, picking up dog shit. And for what? An irritating companion who follows me around the apartment and whines when I close the door to the room I'm in.

I'm sure with some people, in some situations a dog can be great. But for me, I couldn't stand it. I'm just glad I learned that in a temporary situation, rather than misguidedly getting a dog someday and finding out the hard way.

Don't worry though, the dog now lives in a great environment where she'll get plenty of love, attention and exercise. I didn't like the dog, but I really didn't want to mistreat or abuse it.

I have a chihuahua. A beautiful dark grey, long-short hair cross.

He's my little soldier; I trained him physically as a puppy (lots of leaping, sprinting etc) and gave him a super high protein, excessive calorie diet which resulted in him having a big barrel chest and posing shoulders (for a chi). He has a bark loud enough that, if you can't see him, makes people fearful. Nobody can get near to my house without my knowing. He's super protective of his mum and relatively well behaved (for a male chi).

I hated myself for having him castrated but I had no choice; I would enter a room to see him lying on his back masturbating with a fluffy toy between both front paws...often spraying jizz metres across the room

Sadly, it seems he cannot be trusted around children so I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen when we have kids in the next couple of years.
