Dolly Alderton is a writer for the Sunday Times whose weekly Sex and the City-style columns are always a fascinating glimpse into the lizard brain. The hamster is always out in full force, backwards rationalising. She's nearly 30 and wondering why she's being pumped-and-dumped - especially since her prospective partners seem to have such depth ("hot DJs"). Last Sunday's column I have transcribed. Not sure how much of this is an embellishment, but it's worth reading.



The hot DJ cancelled. I shaved my legs. I put on Gitls Aloud fake eyelashes, I even used a heated styling appliance on my hair, but the DJ cancelled 10 minutes before I left. He was booked for a last-minute gig - he was hugely apologetic and suggested we reschedule for Sunday evening.

Sunday evening came, and the DJ texted at lunchtime to say he was looking forward to seeking me and suggested a pub in Notting Hill. He moved the drink to 9.30p, as he was "tied up" with a few things until then. I thought 9.30pm was dangerously close to the booty-call twilight zone, but said it was fine. At 9pm he changed the date to 10pm. I was already dressed and mad-up like RuPaul so I made my way out west anyway. At 9.45, I was sitting with my glass of wine in the pub when he texted me to say he couldn't make it. Because of another "gig".

I decided not to reschedule. He's obviously not over his ex, and I can;t go through the humiliation of being stood up again. I finished my glass of wine and ordered another. After three glasses I realised I was in the pub I used to go to with a boy called Rowan, who I dated in 2009 when I was 21, he was 17, and the age gap felt like dog years. He had just left school, I had just finished my masters, and he was looking for a job. He said he loved me, but I was embarrassed by him. I find him on Facebook and message him. He arrives 15 minutes later and sits down.

"Hi," I say, giving him a hug. "You look exactly the same!"
"You're a real bitch for treating me the way you did, then not calling me for five years."
"Nice to see you too!" I say. "What would you like to drink?"
"Why am I here?"
"I was thinking of you."
"Tell me the truth."
"OK, a date cancelled."
"Jesus Christ," he stands up. "If I wasn't a gentleman I'd..."
"Oh, what? Throw a drink in my face? You're not a woman in Dynasty, Rowan."
"I would actually, but my dad knows the landlord."
"Why do you even still live here? You're not on a gap year any more. Like, get a flat," I say weakly.
"You lived with your parents when you were 22"
"Yeah, but it wasn't a townhouse in NottingHill. It's embarrassing when it's Notting Hill," I shouted after him as he left the pub.
I paid for my tab and got an Uber home. I composed a lengthy text apologising to Rowan for always behaving like a teenager.
He didn't reply, but his words really stuck with me. I suppose I've been writing so extensively about all the bad men I meet, I forgot I might have been a bad woman along the way as well.

TL;DR (i) She allows the alpha jerkboy much leeway, even though he cancels on her, rearranges times, implies he might want a booty-call, (ii) After being humiliated by the alpha jerkboy, she phones one of her orbiters to cash in some validation chips - and humiliate him, (iii) The beta orbiter drops everything to meet her immediately - so she says, though could be a masturbatory fantasy

MORAL OF THE STORY: You're either the "hot DJ" or the Facebook friend.

Moral of the story. When a woman is sitting alone at a bar drinking wine alone its because some DJ cancelled on her. She feels rejected, is dtf, and just shaved her legs today. . .

If he had learned Game he would have attempted to charm and fuck her. With sufficiently high Game skills he could have managed to make her involved - Deep Conversion Game and then he could have dumped her.

But instead he stormed off like a woman and she got the last word in shit-testing him once again.

Yes - at least she realizes that she is just a crappy woman and the guy was likely a rich, good-looking boy who hasn't become a man. She may contact him again when she is 35 and he 30 and a lot more attractive than her.

IF her story is true - a big if with these typists - God knows what she said to get him to show up...and he lives nearby apparently. All he remembers is the hot chick with big tits and a sexually adventurous attitude. He's a few minutes away, she seems dtf so he gives it a shot. But he shows up, sees that she's gained weight and cut the conversation short.

The gentleman she's with is the guy she shares column space with, who gives his dating experience from the other perspective. His weekly columns are always a variation of I-asked-her-out-for-the-second-time-and-she-said-no-it-sucks-being-single-at-55. His makes for depressing reading.
