I dont get it. Why Russia especially? Why dont you hear about tons of Germans and Koreans shooting up AIDS up their veins? Is it something in the Russian make up that makes them prone to alcohol and drug abuse?

Beliefs are more powerful than facts.

RE: AIDS Epidemic in Russia
I was visiting Novokuznetsk after the winters thaw, and as the snow melted outside my apartment, I noticed that there were fucking syringes everywhere on the ground (accumulated from the winter). It was disgusting.

I guess the social atmosphere breeds it - a lot of russians we read about on the news, or as they are portrayed on TV, are alphas, but in the real russian hoody woodies, life is raw, depressing, and prospects nill - imagine living in a communal apartment with three generations of extended family, no real jobs, environment and air quality is horrible, all the good pussy leaves to moscow/st.P, and the weather is depressing 3/4s of the year. Such is the life of the russian prole in the small cities (we call it the okryane). Shoot this up and make it go away? Sure..

It is a strange one, I noticed the same thing in Moscow. Syringes left on the ground even in relatively well off areas that were just on the circle line ring. Although the cities do appear grim, crime seemed to be lower than say somewhere like London or Paris. As someone mentioned before, we used to have the same problem. However over time, money was put into rehabilitation, finding ways to prevent users from just dumping their syringes on the floor. Plus now cities have invested lots of money into 'crime prevention housing'. Making sure there are no areas that are easy for users to hide and get high. London has been very good in this regard, the housing estates are still dangerous but a lot better than they once were.
