Emoticons/Smileys when texting?
Are you guys using them? If so, how much? I use them quite a lot, but lately I've noticed that most girls respond better if not using any of these, maybe just a simple "haha" every once in a while. No "Lols" or ":)" or ";)".

Counter to this experience, I read a study saying that men who uses a lot of smileys and emoticons in online dating gets laid about 10-15% more. Now whether this is because the Asbergers and the socially inept are dragging the score down for the "no smileys" crowd, I do not know.

Roosh has solid advice in bang that you can’t go wrong with, but it’s worth noting that at this point it is a few years old.

I’d argue things have changed a little especially with younger generation of girls.

I tend to like to use explanation mark/s any time I might be tempted to use an emoji, and in my case I find that it helps.

the “thumbs up” being the only exception I can think of as a "one word” reply.

But at times when a girl is using a lot of emojis texting you, I don’t think a simple smiley after a joke or teasing can hurt your odds. But before you go ahead with that, is the joke really necessary? Could you cut it down or get to the point? Not too many compelling reasons to write anything that could possibly be misconstrued.

Anyway I have, in those times thought about using the “winky face” as on the surface it seems perfect to add after a joke/tease.. but I feel it is overused by some guys, I am sure. So I’ve avoided it thus far.

I have a feeling location etc has a lot to do with it, but still always better to error on the side of caution if you are unsure.

I am in California USA & mid late 30’s

In America, I use winky face only, and I calibrate to the girl. If she uses more, I'll respond back. If she doesn't emoji at all, I rarely will.

Outside of the US, girls use a few more emojis, so it's OK to use a few more.

I would love to read this study...

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

Shit changes fast these days. I would never have used an emoji a few years ago. It's totally fine, now. They're great responses to break rapport, actually and see if the girl keeps the conversation going.
