I'd speculate that it's to stop your opponent from butting in to disprove your point. That way it becomes a monologue, not a debate...kind of defeats the object, but genuine discussion is not the goal here.

They're scored on how much they can cram into their alloted time, so the standard is to motormouth and take those short grasps for breath. And yeah, it has nothing to do with a genuine debate and is a complete waste of time.

That's terrible. Whoever made that rule has ruined debate in America. I've tried watching supposedly world champion debates recently as I think debate, counter points and exploration of ideas leads to the truth, but these things are like a high-speed poetry slam. They can't debate anything.

While we are on the college debate topic, does anyone here recall that video of the American College debate association (or something along those lines) president having a race meltdown video? I've been searching for that video but can't find anything. I know it's been posted on the forum before.
