Yeah another similar and I would say even more common myth sold by the media is that people live lives like on Friends or How I Met Your Mother ie everyone has an awesome group of like 10 or 12 core friends, none of them work or work menial jobs yet live in apaprtments and live lifestyles that woudl cost 100K plus per year to live even though they make no money and hardly work.

In reality most peoples friends are busy, most people are lucky to have a friend or a group of 2-3 core friends. Most people don't make 6 figures and don't get to spend their days leisurely drinking coffee.

I think I listened to a Joe Rogan podcast or something interesting where they discussed how the average life portrayed on a sitcom the person would be making like 100k to 300k to actually live that life which is more than the vast majority of people make, but furthermore those jobs would actually require work meaning you cant sit aorund a coffee shop all day and can't drink all night while still working those jobs.

Kind of the same thing as the celebrity thing

You're both objectively right, but I see OP's point a bit differently.

Yes, shit could always be worse. Yes, we are all most likely fairly privileged compared to most of the world. But we also started out better than most of the world.

It's hard to believe that you're in the top 10% when you're making $45k/year as a garbageman while your classmate from high school is making $200k as a financial analyst. The older you get the worse this feeling becomes. After all, you had a much better starting point than the 90% of the world that is struggling.

Like others said before on here, fame isn't something to strive towards, it's simply an advertising cost that politicians and entertainers pay in order to sell their product. Better to pay a celebrity to advertise your product than to do it "in-house" by getting famous.

If you are young, you should aim to make money. If you're really not talented, remember that the world needs carpenters, plumbers, electricians, bus drivers, flight attendants, mechanics, engineers, pilots, train drivers, hair dressers, etc.

Any one of those professions contribute directly to make a someone's life better every single day while they are at work. What pro athlete or celebrity does that?

Well hell, Kate Spade just off'd herself yesterday. She attained fame and surrounded by fame as well (sister-in-law to David Spade). She sold her company for over $100 million. And she fucking killed herself. If that's not a wake up call to the OP what is? Did fame fullfil Kurt Cobain, Robin Williams?

And many of the ones that don't kill themselves are still filling the void with hard drugs like heroin (which accidently killed Phillip Seymour Hoffman).

And the ones that aren't full blown drug addicts still come off as miserable fucks. Look at Lebron James, Amy Schumer, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel. Do any of these people strike you as happy?


And while fame and power are a currency for sex, you still need some game even if you are famous. Why else would Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, and Weinstein resort to rape? There's probably a variety of factors, but lack of game is part of it.

One more thing to the OP, I'll take you Wrestlemania one year. I'll introduce you to a dozen wrestlers who used to be famous (I'm serious). I wouldn't trade places with any of them now. I love to go out and party with them and have a great time at the festivities at Wrestlemania, but I would not trade places with any of them.

I'd say go and spend a month in the countryside in a 3rd world country and stay with people who live a much more primal life. Without much money, living off the land, more natural relationships, rising with the sun, no internet, being rightfully terrified of bad weather etc. It will change your perspective for sure.

OP how old are you? I think you just haven't found what you truly love doing. About 3 years ago in my mid 20s I started experience what I would define as peak happiness, the feeling of not being able to sleep at night, cause I was too happy and just smiling and laughign (no drugs, no alcohol), the feeling of true gratitude, self-love and love and admiration for others. None of those things were connected to material things or status.

Money is clearly not the answer. Freedom of choice and actually doing what you WANT to do will bring true, profound happiness. If being an nba player is what you want to do, then of course, that will bring you happiness too, however, there are even players, who reach the pinnacles of athletic success and don't enjoy it one bit.

I remember once when I was in southern Europe promoting an event, an American guy, who had attended the event, approached me and told about how he would love to have my life. He was a lawyer from NY with a penthouse aparment, his whole family was rich, cars etc. But he still envied me. I told him he could do the same, he said he couldn't, I asked why and he started telling me about what his parents would think.

There's so much out there to do and to be experienced, yet, once you fall into that 9-5 rhythm, disillusionment kicks in and you might tend to yearn for things like more cash or fame or a ridiculously crazy life.
I challenge you to quit your job, learn a foreign language, move abroad and then tell us about that experience. I bet you wouldn't do it. And if you really want to be a pro, I challenge you to work less, focus on your training and tell us about the awesome burning sensations of an intense workout where you pushed yourself past the point of exhaustion and got 0,1% better. You probably wouldn't do it though

He had all the options in the world and yet he couldn't avail of it because of his fame.

Pretty depressing isn't it? But also exhilirating, YOU can do right now what Arnie can't do with a few hundred in your pocket, hire an escort and none will be the wiser, pure discretion, hire an escort when you're someone a distinctive looking as Arnie in the 80's and 90's......you're everywhere and you've everything to lose. Why are you assuming you can't be wealthy? Money is worth having as a goal, at least until you have enough to live life how you want to. You're not stuck in a minimum wage 9-5 job.

I don't care much for fame or being remembered, and not really sure why anyone would want it.. there are easier ways to get laid.

Everything you list sounds like it's coming from ego. Caring about what other people will think, wanting to feel important or remembered. In the end none of that shit will fulfill you.

Even the most famous people in history are merely remembered as caricatures of themselves. Nobody will ever know the true Alexander, Caesar, Salahaddin, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, Napoleon...

The closest these people got to being understood and genuinely connected to others was with their lovers/partners/family while they were alive. Yet even then they saw only certain facets of their personality. The public saw a caricature and a propaganda. So in a way the most genuine and real way to be known is with the people around you. Fame seems to be a fleeting and shallow connection to people who only want one version of you.

Before long we will all die and our children and friends will remember us for a time then we will be forgotten. If you do achieve some fame it will be used by others but even then it will be a foot note in history. The earth will eventually die and the sun will burn out. Whether or not humanity can survive to see the natural end of our planet and solar system is debatable.

So live the best life you can in the present moment for yourself. Celebrate those around you by connecting with them and having genuine honest connection. There is no moment like the present moment.

Yeah I'm not a big Jim Carry fan, however after his acting career kind of went away he seems to have become a pretty deep guy. I’m gonna go right ahead and address the problem at its roots because all this talk about fame and money are just smoke and mirrors (though awesome responses from people). The real issue here is that OP is not happy with his life and feel inferior, insignificant. Like if you die tomorrow it wouldn’t matter. Everyone of us here has dealt with existential crisis before.

You want the tough love solution? Get your ass out of this sick Western world and spend a few months living in the mountain/countryside in some 3rd world countries. You will lose your first world problem immediately when you have none of this bullshit the media bombard you daily with, and see how people struggle daily to survive. These are the people who break their back everyday working manual labor just to feed their children.

But they are happy. Happier than you and me ever could be. Because they don’t have time to think about this ego do-I-matter bullshit. They know that they don’t matter shit in the grand scheme of things but if they stop working moving bricks under the scorching sun eir children will starve. They are happier eating rice and dried fish than you or me eating top grade salmon.

But these words will be wasted on you just like it was wasted on me a decade ago, because at the current state all you can think about is you and your fragile ego. You can’t think about the greater picture.

So here’s some actionable advice that worked for me:

-Go to the gym. If you dream about becoming a pro athlete, well take the first step. If you are already a gym goer train harder. Very rare to see a troubled mind in a healthy body.

-Eat better. This goes with the above. Sugar makes you both depressed and addictive. Don’t be a fat chick.

-Dress better. Head to the lifestyle subforum. If you want to feel important then at least treat your appearance with due respect. Hard to feel inferior while walking in a pimp ass burgundy suit.

-Find and make friends. Find people who have the same interests as you, take an interest in them. When you care about people it takes your thoughts away from your self-induced misery and brighten your soul. A fragile mind is one who wallows in apathy and self-indulgence.

Ask the people in your sport team about themselves. Let them talk about themselves. Don’t judge them, just make a mental note about whether or not you can have a beer with this person. Invite them to a beer. Host a barbecue. Make friends who you can talk to and who wants to talk to you so you don’t give 2 fucks about history remembering you because you know there are people right here now who appreciate your company.

-Dem hoes ain’t loyal. Enjoy the girls if you are young but don’t take them seriously.

-Don’t take yourself seriously.

If you are happy, either you don't give a fuck about fame/money/bitches, or you become famous and rich. I have mentors and friends who are rich, famous and successful and who are miserable. That cliché movie scene where you say "all these riches don't matter if I have no one to share it with" is actually true for most people.
